It’s the age old game of boy versus girl.
Growing up I always fought the generalisations and as much as I loved pink, it came in the form of a bmx bike or a strip of bubble gum with my footy collector cards from the local news agent.
It will come of no surprise then that, when I discovered Anna Bligh had been named the first female to be voted in as Premier in Australia, I wanted very badly to be whisked away from the UK and back to my home town to watch all the women of Queensland do a little victory dance in their heads.
I can’t call myself a feminist, but there is a little piece of me that stands up and celebrates every time a woman gets a step closer.
It’s not about the power either, but some little part of me wonders what it would be like to have grown up in a world where my sex was the dominant one and my rules and religions were shaped by my fellow women.
At the end of the day, Anna Bligh is not a personal friend of mine and I don’t claim to know her views of life and the difficulty of breaking through the glass ceiling.
Though during her victory speech I do like to think that, somewhere inside Premier Bligh’s mind, she was dancing to her own personal song alongside all us other Queensland women.
If the war between the sexes doesn’t matter so much, why is there so much talk about this historical moment?
I’m glad I am old enough to know the relevance of her election and young enough to look forward to the changes still to come.
