Bottom Line or Bust

Today I witnessed Senator Santorum pushing his new book in the media. While witnessing this marvel of right wing genius it just occurred to me, like a cold slap in the face, that the bottom line is the bottom line. You know I actually agree with say 40% of Republican thought. I am fiscally conservative, socially liberal to a point, and I can have that point if I want, so do not jump all over me. We are in a culture war but it is not Liberal vs. Republican, it is about gross excessive unethical capitalism and consumerism. The fact is we use 60% of the world's resources and flip the bird at anyone who does not like it. It is about us putting our noses in places we need not be. Notice how I worded that, need not be, because truly we need to be involved everywhere. I believe America to be a leader in Democratic thought but maybe not in Democratic action in this day and age. We are being robbed of our liberties by any number of angles, yet one is clearly OUR problem.

In the past century we were revered for or support of freedom, however somewhere along the way America has changed from a voice to enact freedom in the world to now mean increased market shares. The word capitalism has been replaced and now means democracy plain and simple. When Bush claims that the Arab nations need democracy what he is really saying is we want to create markets there, little Dubais everywhere, expanded markets, a place to push are wares. Sen Santorum pushes his swag and says we are in a culture war, and I agree, kind of. Santorum's problem is indicative of the right wing culture at large, they think small in terms of America's growth and big in terms of their own and their constituents. Someone like Ann Coulter knows this and feeds off it like a vampiress sucking the life from a close friend. Her survival entwined in a symbiotic dance with Republicans as she drips the blood of her fortunes on the ground for all to see.

So let's look at a scenario, when a Hollywood exec goes to make an idiotic piece of junk movie, he or she is not thinking how the movie may help the liberal cause, or how can I spread social nonsense to the world, they are looking at the bottom line. Now I am not saying across the board there are no movie moguls or musicians not trying to make a point some good some bad, what I am saying is that it is more about the bottom line. Unfortunately it doesn't stop there, our health care is intertwined with the bottom line, from the pharmaceutical companies point of view stem cell research effects their bottom line. We want an alternative to internal combustion - it even sounds old - but to move on affects the bottom line of the oil companies and the auto manufacturers. We can have abortions and glamorize plastic surgery or do more C-sections because of the bottom line. How low is this bottom line and at what point will we decide the bottom line is a little too low? I believe the bottom line is dragging on the ground and we are now entangled in a tragic snare with arms like a mythical octopus. All because we could not prevent the bottom line from snagging on the bottom. When you are fishing and snag bottom you finally come to the conclusion that you have to cut loose and re-tie your rig.

I see a heavy-handed book like that and I think this guy has Presidential aspirations, maybe in 2008.

    That is all.
