Whoa! It is commonly believed that King Tone went to jail to cover for other crimes by Latin Kings. Regardless, this 30-year old Puerto Rican man believed in his cause but was weak in the end. When he went to jail, the Latin Kings degenerated into numerous violent gangs and you know that story. All the while I'm thinking: couldn't the cops and district attorney use a man like King Tone?
King Tone at least kept almost 7000 young men and woman from violent crime. He had the ear of the Puerto Rican community. Even other gangs respect him. Why couldn't we be somewhat flexible with King Tone instead of sending him away and watching that community fracture. Couldn't he have been sat in a room, told that he's being put on 20 years probation, and given an office at a community center. And if he strayed, life imprisonment? I think King Tone would have gone along with that. And wouldn't the cops and DA benefit from that? I know the D.A. called him all kinds of names, but the evidence just doesn't fly. This King Tone was a community leader. One that could have grown into more. But we just see criminal and jail time. And we're so intelligent about crime?
So right now, King Tone sits in prison, as he says, "reading a book every two days" and being a model prisoner, while New York fights the violent factions of the leaderless Latin Kings. Just seems like a wasted chance.

I don't know, the guy seemed to have some pretty obvious personality flaws. He seems like the type of person who would have trouble resisting the corrupting influence of power.
On top of that, the rapid fragmentation of the group once he was in jail makes me think of the personality cults of the last century written in small type.

I have family members who are involved in the Latin King's organization (they now are not involved in it as much as they use to be). I met King tone when I was very young through my cousin from Brooklyn. This man from what I hear has done great things. However, like you and I, we are not perfect. I am going on to my fourth year in college as a student-athlete with a strong anxiety of becoming a lawyer. My goal in life as I see it through my eyes and God's eyes is to help people from the injustice of the criminal justice system in this country. Not to put the system down completely, but like I said we are not perfect. As a strong, proud, religious and loving latin man I say "Latin people, rise from the depression first from oneself before doing it on to others!" Oh, and king Tone, if by any chance you read this, if you are still around, I would like to represent you in a court of law when I become a lawyer ssome day. God Bless.

The gangsters just pretended to be going straight, while continuing with their usual criminal activities. Well, I used to live in Jackson Heights, NY and I remember seeing and being afraid of getting robbed by a Latin King. I was a good kid in a tough city which ended up making me tougher than most people I know, at least spiritually and moraly. As I grew older I realized that the Latin Kings was not the same gang led by King Blood in which it was an incredibally intimidating and violent gang. For that King Blood got time that he deserved and got locked up in solitary confinement for life. On the other hand, King Tone changed everything for the Latin Kings, he made them stronger morally, intelectualy, and most importantly socialy. I dont support the fact that a street gang should exist, but I believe that they could have changed the method of imprisonment for someone who could help change a community for the better. If being in jail does not affect King Tone in a psycologically devistating way, he could be released to the community as a wisely rebuilt and stronger contemporary leader of the world. Indeed the comments are fascinating, Eric. This has a special connection to me since I was a gang member in my teens. Almost bleeding to death in a abandoned warehouse and having a retired Marine save my life turned my life around 180 degrees. I understand the do the crime, do the time slant. And like I said, I'm not excusing what he did. I'm more interested in using guys like him in different ways besides locking them up first. Obviously the Latin King and Queen Nation listened to him. And now, from my studies of current set(s), the NYPD has more problems now than before.

S-Train, how many felonies has the guy been convicted of? It is unlikely he would be sent back to the slammer for real time if his record was even relatively clean before the latest conviction. So, what gives?

From what I've been able to find out Mac Diva, King Tone definately got hit with the three strikes law in New York. He had two minor felonies previously (I think drug possession and some civil unrest charge, correct me if I'm wrong). But what sent him to prison was a penny-anny drug deal that he was the lookout. The Three Strike Law is another discussion altogether. Like I said previously, I have NEVER excused his felonies. I only wanted the NY DA to handle this differently since King Tone had such an influence over several thousand people.

S, it's easy to pass judgment from the outside. I admire the fact that you were able to change your life and that adds hope to those who would like to. I freely admit (been doing that a lot lately!) I would have just assumed the worst about someone like Tone, but I am reminded we shouldn't write people off quite so quickly. I also think the three strikes laws have been a disaster and that a big part of "judgment" involves "judges," and tying their hands has helped no one.
