A few Words on the Iraqi Elections

The Iraqi election has occurred and much has already been written. More is yet to be written and debated as the results come slowing in. We will be learning more about the results on who won and who lost over the next several weeks. The real loser are the terrorist who declared war on the Iraqi people. Who could have imagined that in 2000, we would be seeing both Saddam and the Taliban overthrown and democracy beginning to take initial roots in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Democracy has begun its first baby steps in a region devoid of just concepts. Americans should take pride in what has occurred for the principles that we share as Americans are now taking hold in the Middle East. After World War II, we aided both Germany and Japan in their move to democracy. After the cold war, we saw much of Central Europe join Western Europe on the path to democratic reforms. Now it is the Middle East turn.

There should be no more debate on who was right and who was wrong when it comes to Middle East policies. The terrorist thugs who have maimed and killed many innocent Iraqis have made it clear their disdain for any democratic institution or pluralism. They believe in a society controlled by the chosen few and by fear. We know what will happen if they take control again. We have seen it before. We saw the horrors instituted by Saddam Hussein and we know the horrors instituted by the Talibans. So we don’t have any excuses or misunderstanding the price of failure. The insurgents are not rebels or freedom fighters. They are thugs and their objectives are the complete opposite of who we are and what we represent.

For the past two years, we have debated the merit of our policies and now we are seeing the first concrete results of our efforts. The Iraqi war can now be declared a just war. The debate on the merit of the war is over. Reconstruction of Iraq continues.
