Matt Hales AKA Aqualung kicks off a US tour here in Los Angeles at the Bootleg Theater The bill features a trio of groups with Aqualung as the headline act on at 10 PM.

What is interesting about this new CD is that it has been 3 years since Aqualung has been on the road. This launch and tour is rather a simultaneous rebirth– a new evolution if you will — of Aqualung with a new vigor, attitude and feeling. Spring seems to be the perfect timing for that musical, creative and almost spiritual rebirth sort of feeling that going out on tour provides– as well as this new CD Magnetic North which seems to provide a carefully balanced plate of musical food to mentally chew on. The music is layered and the tune that is probably so evocative to the general public will be the Remember Us with Sara Bareilles that was featured on Grey's Anatomy .

However do not let that ballad — dark and potent — let you think that the entire album is the entire emotional scope of the CD. There is an effervescent, fun side to this man, this CD and his entire approach to the creation of music as well as touring. Fingertips is a great one to test drive!

"Music can be an amazingly potent thing", says Matt Hales/Aqualung "When I sing into the microphone in the studio, I'm whispering my secrets in people's
ears. When it connects, it can be so powerful. It's still a remarkable process to me."

This is a podcast/phone interview done with Aqualung/Matt Hales this past Friday afternoon 4/23/2010. It was an interesting chat and he was extremely accessible. It was illuminating to speak with him about his musical and professional journey and how he manages to juggle the music, the tour, the composing and recording and the family too.

Definitely worth the money to buy the CD, you'll want this in the car too — or at least I do. I have scoured the sites to find enough of Magnetic North to make some preliminary assessment and it is significantly different in feeling – much more upbeat and presents a Matt Hales who is in a more settled, happier, comfortable space.

Do not miss this show, It will be amazing — particularly in light of the podcast content. Expect him to be around for a good long time — a thoughtful, careful composer, musician who is s about creating music, not just cranking out the albums for the money.

Thank you to Matt Hales for his time. I really appreciate that we could connect at the last minute.
