PC Game Review: Path of Exile (open beta)

Path of Exile is a new action role-playing game (ARPG) that is inching its way towards release. Right now Path of Exile is in public beta and thus the NDA has been lifted. I was in the closed beta and have seen it develop quite a bit in response to player feedback.

One thing to remember is that this is quite a brutal ARPG, not easy even at the easiest level. Dying is part of the fun. It is a game of instances both solo and with others. It requires an internet connection all the time, which might turn off some.

The dark and bleak nature of the game is one of its highlights. Despite this, the game is really impressive graphically and the sound assets impressive.

You wake up on a beach with nothing and nasties wanting to kill you immediately. There are six different classes to play, from the pure melee bruiser of “marauder” to the magic-based “witch.”

What is different about this game is there is no gold to be had, it is a barter-based economy. This takes a while to get used to but it works in the end.

What is most endearing about this game, besides the quality game-play, is the epic skill map. It has to be seen to be believed. The potential combinations will keep those who keep on having loads of alts going for years.

Oh, yes, and all this is for nought, nada, bugger all, as in free. The designers behind it make it very clear the game will never be pay to win.

You can help them out by buying things, but they are things like extra character slots, more room in your stash, and cosmetic add-ons.

You actually believe this bunch are ARPG gamers making a game for people like them. It is free, so why not check it out? I doubt you will regret it.
