I so wanted to like this game. I had heard about it for quite a while, it has been available on consoles for a few years, and it had elements that I love. Combine a computer game with heavy metal and this should be a winner.

In fact, however, it is dead lame on the PC. The trouble is that while the game looks brilliant, as a port, the controls are abjectly hopeless. If you try and use the mouse & keyboard it is virtually unplayable. The controls are some of the worst I have experienced on a PC game for quite a while. Someone obviously must have convinced the devs every PC gamer has a console controller.

The combat is bearable, if amazingly clunky, but once you get into a vehicle it is just hopeless. And the camera is about as you can imagine — it is never looking where you need it.

To reiterate, this game is clearly designed for a controller even on the PC. That is unacceptable. If PC users wanted to use a controller they would play on a console, not on their PC. This game is Dark Souls bad. Worse, no where on the Steam page does it say “controller recommended” and that is a major error.

Graphically and aurally Brutal Legend is brilliant. There are few games where music is a well used as in this game. It looks gorgeous on the PC, and even machines at the lower end of the requirements (I have played it on two machines).

This could have been a wonderful “lost” port to PC. Instead it as half-baked port that doesn’t fully use the PC to its full potential.

Unless you have a console controller at hand I would avoid this thing like the plague. I really hate to give this a poor rating but if you want to use mouse and keyboard it simply should not be purchased.

Brutal Legend is rated M (Mature) by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes. This game can also be found on: PS3 and Xbox 360 .
