If Science Fiction movies and TV shows were real, then we have a lot to look forward to. We’ll be able to use robots to do the dishes, help with the laundry (iRobot), lift the car to change a tire (Terminator 2). We could fly to other planets and find life (Avatar, Mission To Mars), or even live in a world where murder no longer takes place (Minority Report). The downside is what we would have to deal with in the future. Machines taking us over and wiping us out (Terminator, T3), or having to find a species of Alien creatures so perfectly created that they pose a threat to our very existence in the Universe as we know it (Alien Quadrilogy).

The following infographic gives us a timeline on what to expect for our future, if of course Sci-Fi became a reality that is. The infographic is quite long, but once you start looking, it’s hard to resist thinking about how the contents of that particular movie could fall in place somewhere in mankind’s future. It’s a little bland colorful items, and images that pop out, but it does tell the story none the less. It would have been great to see some extra movie posters or images from the movies and TV shows discussed within the timeline too. As it stands though, this is the first attempt at an infographic from Tremulant Design, as he stated on his blog at the source link below.

For those Star Wars fans looking to see where that universe would fit in here, there is no mention of anywhere in the timeline. Any true Star Wars fan would know that it takes place “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”, which pretty much means it takes place in our past, making it outside the time scope of this infographic altogether. Thank you to @TremulantDesign for putting this together for us all to reflect on!

Personally, I think if you focus on the supposed huge breakthroughs in Science that these movies propose then you miss all the little advances that actually make it into real life. I remember when retina scanning & biometrics were a Sci-Fi fantasy and now look at things like the Kinect from XBOX or fingerprint readers on laptops. What about flat panel TVs instead of those big ass CRTs?! Not to mention, the tiny computers we now use everyday to call people (audio & video) and to connect to a network. Seriously, if you would’ve told me 20 years ago that I would have a device that would combine my walkman, NES & telephone, that it would be wireless & that I would carry it around without using cartridges & tapes… I would’ve been baffled. Never mind the whole internet thing:)

Oh and I think we forget just how huge a breakthrough touchscreen technology is…

hehe, I agree all the way. Our modern technology has actually gotten many of the original patent ideas from movies.
