Soon the Wii will cost even less.

Nintendo Announces Wii Price Drop

Yesterday, Nintendo announced a price drop for their Wii console.  The system, which had debuted at $249.99, currently has a suggested price of $199.99 and will soon be priced at $149.99.

Nintendo has, of course, already announced that their next system, codenamed Project Café, will be shown off in playable form at this year’s E3.  There is much speculation at this moment about what exactly the system will feature (and some of that talk includes the possibility of the controllers having touchscreens).  All of that talk, however, is for another day.

The price change for the Wii goes into effect on May 15th of this year and the accompanying package will include a Wii Remote Plus, nunchuk, Wii Wheel, and Mario Kart.  It will be available in both black and white.

Also releasing on May 15 is a new best-of line entitled “Nintendo Selects” which will have titles priced at $19.99.  Four games are being put into this new line as of the launch date:  The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Mario Super Sluggers, and Wii Sports.

The Nintendo Wii has, of course, been a huge seller for the company, successfully bringing people who wouldn’t normally consider themselves “gamers” to the console.  Whether this price reduction will further broaden the appeal of the system with the next generation console looming on the horizon remains to be seen.  At the very least, the black Wii Wheel looks pretty cool.
