Adobe targets mobile devices with their recent update to the popular Creative Suite Platform.

News Release – Adobe Creative Suite 5.5

Adobe Systems Incorporated has just released an update to their Adobe Creative Suite Platform to take it to 5.5. This new release will enable designers and developers to target popular and emerging smart phones and tablet platforms, as well as the directions that mobile communications are moving. This will fundamentally change the way that content is distributed and used. Through substantial advances to HTML5, Flash, and digital publishing and video tools, there are a number of new features that have come to the new Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 product family.

This new release targets two groups. The first is individual content authors – the designers and developers that use Adobe products every day. They want to target mobile devices but they need the processes, templates, and the workflows to make sense of all of these mobile devices. The next group is content publishers. These include the traditional media publishers, but also big corporations that want to bring their messages to the consumer. They need a way to settle on a platform – HTML 5, Flash, what kind of skill sets are needed and how to monetize my content.

Adobe is also changing their milestone releases to a 24-month cycle as opposed to their traditional 18-month cycle. But now, there will be between cycle releases such as this one that are aimed at keeping customers ahead of the curve on new developments in technology. They are also announcing a new subscription edition of CS5.5 where you can purchase the suites on a time period basis.

The main focus of this release is the targeting of mobile devices, specifically Android, Blackberry, and iOS enabled devices. This will allow end users to bring the power of these devices to become integrated into their traditional workflows. They will do that by bringing Flash framework to mobile devices, by adding HTML 5 to browser based content, JQuery mobile framework to Dreamweaver, and Multi-screen preview so you can see how your work will look on several different form factors.

There are new advances in digital publishing abilities. Through the use of Adobe InDesign CS5.5 in combination with the integrated Folio Producer toolset, designers can add new levels of interactivity to their page layouts that are targeted to tablet devices. These new documents can include audio, video, panoramic views, pan and zoom of images, 360-degree object rotation, integration of HTML and HTML5 content and other interactive overlays, leading to a more robust and engaging reading experience. Creative Suite 5.5 complements Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to support publication, sale and analysis of content on an array of tablet devices.

With the release of the new Adobe Photoshop Touch Software Development Kit (SDK), developers can build applications that interact with Photoshop from Android, BlackBerry, and iOS devices. Also announced, are three new iPad applications from Adobe that demonstrate the possibilities of using tablet computers to drive common Photoshop workflows. These include Adobe Color Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop.

In Adobe Premiere Pro 5.5, Adobe has boosted its Mercury Playback Engine by broadening its graphics processing unit (GPU) hardware support to include laptops and more supported cards, allowing users to open projects faster, get real-time feedback and work more smoothly at higher resolutions. In After Effects CS5.5 there are creative innovations with addition of Warp Stabilizer – helps remove shakiness and Camera Lens Blur – which offers more realistic depth-of-field blurs , as well as enhanced NLE project exchange, and improved audio collaboration.

Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 products are scheduled to ship within 30 days, with availability through Adobe Authorized Resellers; the estimated price for the suites is expected to be US$2599 for CS5.5 Master Collection, US$1899 for CS5.5 Design Premium, US$1799 for CS5.5 Web Premium, US$1699 for CS5.5 Production Premium and US$1299 for CS5.5 Design Standard. Upgrade pricing and volume licensing are also available.
