New Music Tuesday: Jenny & Johnny, Heart, Goo Goo Dolls, Phil Selway, Miles Davis

I didn’t expect this week’s releases would stack up with those from last week as far as my interest goes and, well, I was right.  There are some good titles this week but they just can’t compete with Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, and Charlie Musselwhite.

I might be sitting this week out but there are some noteworthy releases we should discuss.  For starters there is the new ICON series from Universal Music Group.  It’s another series of “Best Of” collections and in most cases for artists who already have several.  Among those who are being dubbed icons are Nirvana, Bryan Adams, Rick James, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Also out this week are side project releases from performers affiliated with famous indie bands.  Radiohead drummer Phil Selway releases his first solo album Familial.  Indie starlet Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley) has teamed up to make a record with her boyfriend Jonathan Rice, another established indie singer/songwriter.  That record is called I’m Having Fun Now and I’ll be curious to see if Pitchfork loves it or if Lewis and Rice are so last year for the indie hipsters.

We also have the new record from Heart (Red Velvet Car) as well as one from Goo Goo Dolls (Something For The Rest Of Us).

The only title that has my attention is the Legacy Edition of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew.  I’m still not well grounded in jazz but I’ve yet to hear something from Davis that I haven’t liked and Kind of Blue is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard.  I don’t know what Bitches Brew represents in his catalog or from what period of his career it comes but I’ve heard of this title and it’s one I might have to explore.
