Decisions, decisions… do I buy the new Jackie Greene CD this week or do I go with the latest from Kenny G?

Welcome to the final installment of New Music Tuesday for June 2010. June has been a huge month for great new music and there are some good titles — and Kenny G — here in the final week of the month.

Jackie Greene
Till The Light Comes

I’ve actually never heard Jackie Greene, but I’ve heard of him and I’ve heard of him through two trusted musical friends: El Bicho and Joan Hunt. These two have turned me on to a lot of good, good stuff over the years. I haven’t vibed to all their recommendations but they’ve hit way more than they’ve missed. Both of them saw Greene at a blues festival earlier this year — don’t know if that was their first experience with him — and they both came back raving about him. That’s enough for me. I’m putting this on my “must” list. I won’t be able to do it today but next payday, it’s a pretty safe bet I’m having one of these.

I’d also like to point to a new album from 78-year old Kenny Burrell. He may not be a household name to you but he’s been working the jazz and blues scene for some time. His “Chitlins Con Carne” has been covered by the greats including Stevie Ray Vaughan and on Ronnie Earl’s upcoming album Spread The Love.

As many of you have gathered, I’m not much of a hip hop aficionado but I see some recognizable names on the chart. That’s actually probably a bad thing because it means their 15 minutes ended ages ago and they suck now, but I’ll leave that verdict up to folks who listen to and know their hip hop. I’m just saying if that’s your musical persuasion, you should glance through the list.

Here they are, folks, yours if you want them.

About Josh Hathaway

  • http://marksaleski.com Mark Saleski

i recommend the Alejandro Escovedo disc. has Bruce on one track.

  • http://blogcritics.org/writers/josh-hathaway Josh Hathaway

I was half-right. I expected this first comment was from you but anticipated a Kenny G wisecrack instead. Yeah, Escovedo is another intriguing possibility.

  • http://marksaleski.com Mark Saleski

ah, the Kenny G thing is too easy. besides, it’s not as much fun since Kenny G’s Assistant went on hiatus.

  • http://blogcritics.org/writers/josh-hathaway Josh Hathaway

You’re right. I took it exceedingly easy on him, too. What’s left to say. I think the guy is sincere. He sincerely sucks but I don’t think he tries to. It just happened.

    What’s left to say

after what Pat Metheny said, the answer is definitely “nothing”.

  • http://blogcritics.org/writers/josh-hathaway Josh Hathaway

Absolutely nothing. He brutally vivisected him there. That made me wince and I don’t like the guy’s music.

Try Ritenour’s Six String Theory – Sterling gathering of some of the best pickers alive. Pick a genre and let your jaw drop. Smooth Jazz my a**.

Greene’s release is more … accessible … than his previous stuff but still quite fine – hey, gotta pay the bills.

  • http://marksaleski.com Mark Saleski

kind of amazing, eh josh? the first time i read that, i had to do more investigating because i couldn’t believe those words came out of Pat’s mouth. it’s true though, quite a passionate guy.

  • http://theglenblog.blogspot.com Glen Boyd

Whatever happened to Kenny G’s assistant anyway? I’d say Pat’s remarks demand an indignant rebuttal…

I am guessing it’s Joan who provided the stuff you can’t vibe to.

  • http://blogcritics.org/writers/josh-hathaway Josh Hathaway

Heh, now now, El Bicho. Let’s stick to the part where I praise the awesome taste and guidance I’ve received from you both.

Picked up the Jackie Greene disc. It’s the first of his I’ve listened to so I don’t know about it being more or less commercial but I liked it. I need to spend more time with it to get a fuller sense but it pleased me.

What else have I given you?

Before the Doheny Fest with the frequently mobile Mr. Berlin I’d only heard Jackie play with Phil Lesh on some boots so not sure what his album will be like with him front and center

You hit on Back Door Slam and probably on Jackie Greene. Those are the first two what come to mind.
