Things should start to get interesting right about now...

New Music Tuesday: Black Crowes, Arcade Fire, Guster, QOTSA, Los Lobos, Buckcherry, Lady Gaga

It’s the first New Music Tuesday of August and there are some big names with new music.  We’re getting closer to the crush of end-of-year releases aimed at a certain holiday in December (I refuse to say the word when it’s 110 degrees outside) but the record labels are clearly thinking about it.  So who do we have this week?  The Black Crowes, Arcade Fire, Buckcherry, Dr. John, Los Lobos, Gov’t Mule, Queens Of The Stone Age, and the inescapable, intolerable Lady Gaga.

QOTSA is releasing a deluxe edition of Rated R.  I primarily own that record because of Mark Lanegan’s vocal on “In The Fade.”  I doubt I’m going in for this unless there are more Lanegan tracks.  Los Lobos tends to always do interesting things, somewhat under the radar.  I’m not picking this up today because I have a ton of August reviews to write but I’ll likely add this down the road.  There’s only one CD that’s on my “must” list for the week, and it is…

Black Crowes
Croweology

It’s a new album that isn’t from a band that is but soon won’t be.  The Black Crowes broke up and reunited, releasing two excellent records – War Paint, Before The Frost…Until The Freeze – and now they’re going on hiatus again.  They’ve said they’re not breaking up but haven’t made plans to record or tour together in the near future.  Before they go, they’re hitting the road one more time and have assembled a treat for fans.  Croweology celebrates the 20th Anniversary of their debut record and is a specially priced 2-CD set of unplugged Black Crowes songs.  Among the songs getting the unplugged treatment are “Jealous Again,” “Remedy,” “Soul Singing,” and “Thorn In My Pride.”  This won’t be an essential add for everyone but at the price ($7.99 at Amazon this week) it’s something even casual Crowes fans ought to investigate.  I pre-ordered mine!

So I said there was only one CD on my radar this week and that’s true.  What I didn’t say is there is a digital download that is a “must” this week.  The first single from Guster’s upcoming Easy Wonderful is available for $1 at iTunes and that’s what I’m listening to right now as I wait for UPS to bring my Black Crowes CD.  This is now the second song I’ve heard from the upcoming album and I keep getting more and more excited for October 5th to arrive.  I’ll be putting something up about “Do You Love Me?” in Verse Chorus Verse — likely later today – so stay tuned for that.
