We want to introduce ourselves to the blogging world. We’ve talked about the need for relaxation for busy moms for years. We are pediatricians, as well as moms, who escape to spas for rejuvenation. In our quest for the perfect getaway, we’ve formed strong opinions about each experience. We know what we like and know what we don’t. Difficult? Maybe. Informative? Definitely! If time is as valuable to you as it is to us, this is for you.
Recently, we spent an incredible weekend at the Heartland Spa in Gilman, IL. We loved the idea of showing up in our street clothes and being given sweatpants, sweatshirts, t-shirts and shorts to exercise in! Also, once you work out or sweat in them, you leave them outside your room and they bring you new clothes. How easy is that? Wish we could get a laundry fairy like that at home.
Considering that we left straight from work to go there, it was helpful that they gave us a list of what we needed to bring in advance so the spa vacation would be stress-free from the moment we decided to go there. Once we arrived, we were greeted by Kim, the fitness specialist, who was friendly and informative in helping us acclimate to our weekend. They also provide all the meals for you. Initially, we were worried we would starve because they stick to 1,500-calorie, low-fat, nutritious cuisine. Ok, we admit, we smuggled some chocolate contraband in and debated about bringing wine. Surprsingly, however, we were full after meals and they always had fruit and vegetables for snacks, and coffee, iced tea, and water available. Sure, we missed the bread basket and spreads we are accustomed to at other spas or fine restaurants. However, this spa is considered a destination wellness spa, which is different than a resort spa. We’ll differentiate the two and further describe our Heartland experience in future articles. Remember, your health is vitally important. The best things in life aren’t things!
