My Soul to Take – Craven Loves Killing Teens

Some of Wes Craven’s best films involve the slaughter of teenagers, be it Last House on the Left or Deadly Friend. In fact, two of his films have become horror milestones for the teen death-dealing, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. I am sure someone could argue against their merits, but there really is no denying the mark these two films have left on the slasher genre. It is a genre that Craven is returning to with a vengeance.

The legendary (and uneven) filmmaker has two teen-killing slasher films coming in the near future. There is the high profile return to the Scream franchise. I know I am interested in seeing that. I also feel it is likely to overshadow the release of My Soul to Take, which is currently slated to open in October and seems almost destined to be eaten alive by Saw VII and Paranormal Activity 2. In any case, it has a brand new trailer that seems somewhat compelling.

The story tells of a serial killer called The Ripper, who promises to return to kill the children who were born the day he dies. Sixteen years later he apparently returns to carry out his promise on the seven children born that night. The question is, did he survive the night he was left for dead, or has he been reincarnated in one of the seven?

The trailer looks somewhat interesting, although the performance clips seem a little flat. Craven has had a very uneven career with some great films. Something tells me this will not be one of them. However, it is great to see him getting back out there, this will be his first release since 2005’s Red Eye.

Thoughts? Do you think this will be any good?
