Wish You Had Died

Happy Birthday Trent Reznor. You are 38 today.

Congratulations. Hang on though, you don't like that type of thing.

Come to think of it, you don't like much of anything. But you're faking that, too. You are the King of Pretention.

I wish you had got your dearest dream. I didn't even have to read between the lines. But you're not dead. You're still in self-inflicted, mortally conflicted agony. Boo hoo.

I'm a troubled individual but I never could figure out why people like whatever it is you do. Is it really the passion? I detect none. Is it the bombastic beats and the piledrive rhythm? There's lots that do it better. Is it your smart, caustic wit? Nah. Monsyllabic Trent? Nah.

It's just gotta be the black clothes. Black is always in.

But what the hell do I know? I don't like your pretention princes U2 either.

I can understand a certain portion of what you are saying. Dark for the sake of dark seems silly, but there are a couple of things you can respect Trent Reznor for. Number one, he always puts on a great show. Number two, despite all his remix cd's he really doesn't pump out albums every 6 months which decreases his score on the pretention scale. He doesn't assume that people will just keep buying unless he takes his time in between releases. Number three, although he is dark, he seems to avoid the level of cheese (in my opinion) of Marylin Manson, and horror rockers like Rob Zombie.

I agree with you on U2. Some of their music is ok, but I would prefer my rockstars not egomaniacally try to save the world.

I don't mind dark. The remix CDs are usually the better ones. His MO should be - get ready to release a CD and then stop, take it back and Remix it all. And then release that.

Strangely enough - and can't explain it - I like Rob Zombie's stuff/music. Even though he's as ego-driven as they come, his music has always been humorous as well.

Criticize his angst-filled mood all you want--the man is clever. His rhythmic timing and sense of innovation weigh a heavier influence to the world of music than what you are offering. He also knows what is what.

Have you heard the soundtrack to Lost Highway or Natural Born Killers? He produced those. Without Trent Reznor, I may never have been introduced to the Cowboy Junkies, to Leonard Cohen or David Bowie. Trent Reznor gave me them. For that alone, he has my respect.

Say what you will, the man has a soul.

Trent Reznor and Leonard Cohen in concert together--now that would be a fun filled yukfest! No sharp objects allowed in the arena, please.
