What made you audition for American Idol? I know you had a deal before. How did you feel about people talking about that?
Hey, it gives you press. You gotta stay in the press to get well known on the show, and it helps you out a little bit. I know a lot of us have previous stuff. We've all had CDs and demos. We've all done some sort of musical work. But it was seven years ago that I had the contract. So it was sort of a second shot at my dream. And so I'm really happy that I got the opportunity.
What were you doing prior to American Idol?
I had lived in Texas for four years and I was singing there. And I was working at Cowboys - I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's a huge honky-tonk bar. I actually had some vocal problems, I had acid-reflux. I had to take off seven months, so I just moved home. I moved home for like a year and half and then auditioned for American Idol.
Had you been a fan of the show before?
Yes, I watched the first year with Kelly Clarkson. And I watched Carrie Underwood's year. We don't have cable, so it was kind of like whenever... [laughs] Yeah, I live in kind of a small town.
So what was your favorite part about being on the show?
Probably just the outcome of everything, you know? Making it that far in such a huge competition was really, really cool. And, you know, that was basically my dream. So now I'm on tour. I have a contract and an album coming out. So it's kind of like the whole experience was just too much. It was huge - it was like, awesome. I'm so glad I did it. If I hadn't done that I probably wouldn't be here today at all.
I know you made a sign - “Kristy’s seat” - for the bottom three. How did you feel about being there several times?
[Laughs] Yeah, I was breaking the ice. I actually was just like, it was kind of a joke you know. I'm like 'Oh Kristy's seat.’ I was just doing that because everybody was so tense all the time about being in the bottom. It's really not so bad to be up there standing and then still standing when the elimination's done. It was really nice. So, I was just happy to have made it through every round. I don't know, I was just kind of going to loosen it up. Make something fun and all. That's why I did it.
