Top Ten Rock Bands and Songs EVER - Comments Page 15

Surfing on a tidal wave of hubris, I have selected the Top Ten Rock Bands of all time for MSNBC, and while I was at it, thrown in the Top Ten Rock Songs also. I already have a flood of emails respectfully begging to differ with my selections and/or questioning my sanity - the more the merrier.…

Good top 10 list. Always very subjective. There are a few in your 'also mentioned' that I might put in the 10 ten. For instance, the WHO. Maybe the CLASH. Part of my criteria is the 'social movement' catagory. A band having a force on society outside of the audience in their realm of music.

    anyway, yap yap yap.....

    peace and love

i think that people seem to forget that music is universal, and that people opinions of what bands are the "greatest" are actually a ranking of which bands have had the greatest influence on that individuals life. Eric Olsens list is a list of bands that have produced music that have evoked or stirred up some feeling or emotion which is worth remembering, as music does to all of us. Perhaps people should spend some time listening to the bands and songs on Erics list, such as Sly and the Family Stone, instead of attacking him for his opinion.

thanks Nicole, that was very kind and thoughtful of you! I agree that the bets use of a list like this is to discover or rediscover artists and their bodies of work - I did try to take into account objective criteria like popularity, influence, staying power, etc., when I put the list together.

    Thanks again!

i like to see persons who are interested to rock music... Your list is respectable..i mean i dont care to see that most of the rock music im listening is not on your list.. but keep going maybe they will lol...but seriously did you ever listened to stratovarius? and to headpins

    A band from finland

  • 681 - Jon M

    Mar 10, 2006 at 1:32 am

stratovarius is the band from finland not headpins:P for noob who dont know

I definitely think Queen deserves a spot, they are very influential. the thought of "Hey Ya" over "Bohemian Rhapsody" is ridiculous

  • 683 - Calib

    Mar 11, 2006 at 11:48 pm

Guns n roses needs to be on the top 10 also, they are great. Axl has a great voice and slash has pulled off rifts most dont attempt

  • 684 - confused

    Mar 17, 2006 at 2:04 pm

I totally agree with calib on the guns n roses front. Now, I don't particulally like Axl's songs but when you listen to them you know you are listening to something special. Just listen to 'Sweet Child O' Mine' or 'Welcome To The Jungle'. The guitaring on the latter is timed so well, and with a lot of guitarists, that is very hard. Also I seem to realise most top 10 rock bands are not rated on their genious, it's their age they're being rated on.

  • 685 - Eric Olsen

    Mar 17, 2006 at 2:19 pm

Gun 'n' Roses had a great album, I agree, but I dont' think that is enough to move them to the very top - the Sex Pistols have a similar issue

This has got to be the worst list every, first of all, velvet underground???Grateful Dead??? Theres no way they match Zeppelin, and wtf Bob Marley and the Wailers, who do u think u are!?. You odviosly no nothing about rock and roll. the list should go like this

    Mar 26, 2006 at 1:52 pm

bTW i didnt include the beatles because we all no how great they are and that they belong in the list, probably at number one, i just threw this list together to show you all the great and most importatnly, extreamly influential bands or artists(JIMI) you didnt give enough credit to or didnt bother listing them in the top 10. Obviously you went wrong somewhere judging by how many people think ur list is full of crap.

I was really tempted not to leave a comment here sinply because with fifty bazillion comments already it's a pretty sure bet mine will just get lost in the shuffle.

Not much to quibble with here though.

I probably would have rated The Byrds a bit higher simply because that bands "jingle jangle" paved the way for much which followed...Tom Petty and R.E.M. not the least of the beneficiaries there.

To me Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are a no-brainer simply because, as anyone who has seen them live knows, they are probably the greatest live band on the planet. But I understand the logic behind leaving them off because Springsteen is primarily viewed as a solo performer (ditto for Hendrix).

As for the Dead, I've simply never got them. My memories of their "magical" concerts are primarily of being bored to tears and having a filthy woman covered in mud try to sell me a "taco" from a box covered with what looked like car grease.

Sly and Marley...your other controversial choices...are no brainers. Sly's incendiary Woodstock performance is possibly the most powerful rock (and yes, it was rock) performance ever captured on film (though I'd also rank Janis at Monterey pretty high). Marley is simply a visionary whose influence is absolutely huge.

I was also surprised at the support for Aerosmith. They we're a great rock band from Get Your Wings through Draw the Line, but fell off pretty rapidly after that. Their recent output to me reeks of sellout (though they are still a great live band).

I would have also rated The Alice Cooper Band a bit higher. They we're a ragged musical unit at best, but their theatrical stage shows basically redefined how rock music is presented in live performance. Kiss owe their very lives to Alice.

Overall a very good list though I think.

    Mar 27, 2006 at 2:45 am

One last thing I forgot to add...

I'd put in The Beach Boys for the Dead.

For Pet Sounds alone. Hell, for Good Vibrations alone.

  • 692 - Eric Olsen

    Mar 27, 2006 at 6:32 am

thanks Glen, can't disagree too much, really just a matter of trying to assign priorities to the various attributes. The Dead have bored many, but inspired many over generations.

I would definately have to agree with post #2...
BUT,I would have to partially disagree with post #3. Metallica wasn't necessarily the pinnacle for success of metal in the mainstream. I would have to give that honor to Iron Maiden. As for Nirvana, all they did was show how easy it is for non-talented f*cks to make it in the spotlight.

To coincide with posts 2 & 3, Ironchrist would not only be a fresh and excellent addition to a Top 10 list but they also pioneered music more in one album(their only album)than Nirvana did in their entire shitty career!

    My Top Ten:

    1.YES
    2.RUSH
    3.Iron Maiden
    4.Yngwie Malmsteen
    5.Watchtower
    6.Dream Theater
    7.Atheist
    8.IronChrist
    9.Death
    10.Opeth

    What about Queen?!

  • 695 - J. P. Spencer

    Mar 27, 2006 at 10:52 am

If this post and comments point to anything, it is the subjectivity of music from listener to listener.
I am reminded of an episode of "Night Gallery" penned by Rod Serling where John Astin ("Gomez Addams")is playing a hippie in the afterlife. He is ushered into a Victorian-styled room where an elderly couple is showing a slide show of their life's vacations. Astin's character soon realizes he is in Hell. His guide in the afterlfe turns to him and says, "Remember, what is Hell to you here is Heaven to someone up there".
I remember this every time I play "Doc At The Radar Station" by Captain Beefheart in front of my wife, driving her nuts.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion about what different music means to them and who they believe deserves special favor. I end asking the populace to consider "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys as a song worthy of the top ten. Not trying to force it on anyone; just consider it.

  • 696 - JP

    Mar 27, 2006 at 11:35 am

This task is impossible for anyone, so not only is it brave to take it on to begin with, given everyone's going to have an opinion. Still, some of the anti-Queen comments here (particularly about the quantity of "godawful shi*") fail to acknowledge their influence being second to that of the Beatles in British rock, and the level of talent demonstrated by 4 members with college degrees and by all 4 members penning top 10 hits, a feat not even the Beatles pulled off. These guys are royalty, even with their attempt to "cash in" with Paul Rodgers.

  • 697 - Eric Olsen

    Mar 27, 2006 at 5:54 pm

thanks JP, as I have said, my feelings toward Queen are very mixed: greatness, ickyness, grandeur, foolish camp - a very weird combo. I can certainly understand the reasons why so many think them at the very top.

JP Spencer, I remember that episode! Classic, and very good analogy. Yes, it is exceptionally subjective; although as I have said, I tried to incorporate as many objective criteria as I could.

And I have no problem whatsoever with "Good Vibrations" in the Top 10. this list is already two years old - I would likely pick the songs differently by now.

You're all full of it. Everybody knows that Pantera was the greatest band of all time. Aren't they the ones who was keeping metal alive during the early 90's when grunge was becoming popular and metal was starting to die a little. then BAM! Pantera comes back, and metal was back. not to mention i didn't see anybody mention white zombie either. i guess that's how it is for a list where a fat black bitch is named as one of the greatest rock and roll performers of all time. (yes, i'm talking about aretha franklin)

Guns N Roses anyone? I would put them ahead of a few people on this list. 1. Sly and family Stone,2. Bob Marley,3. Velvet Underground. This list is less then average with the exception of a few bands. I would have included guns n roses, black sabbath,Queen, and aerosmith, and taken away some others.(i think everyone knows which ones).

  • 711 - bobby jenkins

    Jul 17, 2006 at 11:49 pm

You guys cmon you cant say that sly or marley arent rock because theres no carved in stone definiton of rock. That being said it's kinda hard to put a band that isn't even widely considered rock up there in front of the who or cream or this probably just me but boston is pretty hard to take. Overall i think your list is pretty good with the exception of U2, marley, and sly. I wouldve replaced them with the who queen and cream but thats just me and i guess its all just perception

  • 714 - Douglas Mays

    Jul 25, 2006 at 4:54 pm

OK, I have one that is a sleeper. The Beatles (who rate as an all time best) have that one song "Happy Birthday". Kinda cheezy, one would think. But that song is actually some pretty serious heavy rock. You know when the song goes into the instrumental passage in the middle of the tune? Pay attention, those guitars are as heavy as anything in rock music.

Anyway, just a thought. Not the greatest or deepest song around, but I do give it an honorable mention in the heavy rock guitar attack catagory.

    best,
    DM

I think your list simply sucks, sorry guy, but u2? and grateful dead? in your top ten? Where are your priorities fellow co-operator? Not to mention that Velvet Underground is way out of touch. I think you should think twice and a bit through my good chum. Rock and Roll is too broad and can't be put in a list like other music genres, such as jazz, pop, disco or hip-hop. Rock music is constantly changing and becomes something else. Thats all, oh!? by the way you should put in your list Arctic Monkeys now before they really hit big in the states, their sound is refreshinly good, great stuff, give it a try.

  • 718 - zingzing

    Aug 24, 2006 at 3:04 pm

velvet underground, out of touch? artic monkeys? i'll admit that u2 and the dead (and led zepp and bob marley and pink floyd) have no business being on this list, but ARCTIC MONKEYS? wha?

velvet underground obviously needs to be on this list, if such a list need exist. the stooges and bowie and prince should also be on said list.
