The Vines on David Letterman

Author: wKenPublished: Aug 20, 2002 at 3:53 am 28 comments

So I just got through watching The Vines on David Letterman. It's easy to mix them up with The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Hives, The Clash, but they are the ones that sing "Get Free" and have that video on MTV where the band is playing in a storm and gets blown-up by lightening, one at a time.

Craig Nicholls, the lead singer and guitarist, looked like he was soooo wasted on Letterman. His eyes were frozen half-closed while he tried to swallow the microphone singing and swinging his guitar. He smashed the drum set and fell over an amplifier. I think I saw that act in "The Kids Are Alright".

If I were 20, I would think they were f*cking great, and I'd be right. They make great television.

I'm older, and I'm thinking I see a future episode of "VH1: Behind the Music" in the making. Whether it's an act or public self-destruction, it still won't end well.

Tip of the Day:

If you are in the music business, these guys could be HUGE with the right promotion. If you are involved with them personally, cut your losses and run. IMHO.

think of it like this...The White Stripes had one good release, their first one. they can't cover any new territory. it's all old and redundant. at least these guys can act drunk, break sh*t, and use distortion sometimes.

    The Vines rocked Letterman.
    It was so funny!
    These guys are for real!
I am 32 and Australian and i have seen the sex pistols bbc controversy and then i saw Guns n Roses try to become the next sex pistols.
The Vines are Young guys who dont give a crap,
what i saw on Letterman was rock n roll.
The Vines will conquer the world!!

The Vines will conquer the BETTY FORD CLINIC if they know what's good for them. You can't conquer the world without conquering the US, and we aren't in the mood anymore for what was clearly someone's sad and pathetic addiction problem sullying the same stage that used to host the ED SULLIVAN show (where the Beatles and the Stones and every act in the world played in the 60s), in the heart of NYC which has bigger troubles these days and thinks people like the Vines' lead singer are more SAD and not at all ROCK N ROLL. I can only assume they were ejected from the building before the show even ended. MUSIC is an art AND a profession. Someone is about to become unemployed...bank on it.

bah...is this an american site? does anyone know a link so i can watch it.. i think they "sing" a little more than get free.. a whole cds worth of songs in fact.. it'd be better if they didn't 'get big' in america.. sorry not being rude.. it just often means the death of good music and brings it down to a bland, repeatitive level and everyhting becomes too commercial..
the vines guys are not as hardcore as u all believe.. if i was on a stupid show then i would trash it just for fun because u know u can get away with it.. fun fun!! :) all that aside vines are good and easy to listen to.. however their popularity will inevitabley mean hearing them on pathetic commercial stations (has already begun) and little 12 year olds saying 'their rad, almost as good as no doubt and backstreet boys and eminem' blah blah as they listen to holly valance on repeat.. arrghh

Guys, listen to the CD. Get Free is a good single, but the whole CD is just unreal. This is a good band, not a one-hit wonder. Music history in the making, man.

In australia all we r exposed to is american shit (yes some of it is good) but u guys neva take the time to experience international music cos u guys are so ignorant and patriotic..... take the time and listen there is an amazing movement in rock and if u shut out The Vines u are missing an integral part of it. Okay, I'm sorry but really, when was the last time a good band came from Australia? Until The Vines that is. Besides, you better hope they make it big in America b/c our commercialism is what drives the music industry. British blow all new bands with any potential out of the water by calling them all sorts of things like, "the greatest band ever", "musical taste not seen since Radiohead", blah blah. Plus, the only reason why America began putting together all those repetitive, annoying, poppy, ridiculous Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake shit together is because EVERYONE AROUND THE WORLD bought it and listened to it. Who do you think the Sugababes are? Fucking rock n' roll? No, they're just trying to make the dough like Britney. I'm just glad rock is back.

The Vines are a great band. People think Craig Nicholls
is a wacked up stoner who freaks out all the time,
but once you hear the music that all melts away. He isn't screaming and wigging out,
    he's reflecting the way he feels about that song and how it should sound;
and doing a damn good job of it. So if you've just seen their preformance on Letterman and hate them,
hit yourselves over the head and go buy Highly Evolved.

I think the vines are cool, but i'd wish they'd get rid off this stupid bad ass we so rock n roll image, like all the other "The" bands today. Why cant there be someone like janis joplin breaking boundries with their music and not their image?
