The Tuesday Morning Purchase: October 30, 2007: Patrick Moraz, Al di Meola, Leni Stern, Ellen Foley, String Cheese Incident

Part of: Tuesday Morning Purchase

What's in store this week? Piano music from an art rock veteran, tangled tangos, jazz guitar-meets African melodies, re-issued 80's cheese, and pure jamband essence.

All of that and a cool jazz trivia tidbit.

Windows of Time - Patrick Moraz (MVD Audio)/Art Piano?

Moraz is best known for his keyboard work with Yes (Relayer in particular) and The Moody Blues, though my absolute favorite Moraz recording is Music For Piano and Drums. It was a fabulous album of duets with Bill Bruford behind the kit. This record is a remastered/reissue of a set of solo piano compositions.

Diabolic Inventions and Seduction for Solo Guitar, Vol. 1: Music of Astor Piazzolla - Al di Meola (Inakustik)/Jazz

Piazzolla was a huge influence on Al di Meola. The word 'diabolic' actually came from Piazzolla, who used it to describe his own music. It wasn't a boast so much as an acknowledgement that he'd moved the tango away from the tradition.

Africa - Leni Stern (Leni Stern)/Jazz

Leni may not have the same "chops of doom" as husband Mike, but I've always enjoyed her ideas. This records fuses African and American music to great effect.

P.S. Did anybody know that Mike Stern is Kyra Sedgwick's half-brother? I didn't!

Another Breath - Ellen Foley (Wounded Bird)/Rock

Holy 1980's Batman! It's all gettin' a little fuzzy now, being that I can't remember if I know Ellen Foley because a) I happen to have this particular recording on vinyl or b) Her character on the TV show Night Court was replaced by Markie Post. Either way, I'm buyin' this one.

On the Road: 08-09-07 Morrison, CO - The String Cheese Incident (Sci Fidelity)/Rock

Hello major label-type people! This is what is called fan-friendly music. A four-day run at Red Rocks, available for download at Live Cheese as well as traditional media.

I think she also used to date Mick Jones from the Clash (Ellen Foley that is).

SCI?! Is this Tuesday Morning Purchase or Bootleg Country?

Here I was, thinking Ellen Foley was the girl from the Apple ads that talked about how her PC died ("beep beep beep") so her parents bought her a Mac. That would be Ellen Feiss, if anyone cares.

SCI?! Is this Tuesday Morning Purchase or Bootleg Country?

There's no reason it can't be both. And considering the state of the Bootleg Country these days, it is probably best the bands started migrating elsewhere.

The jamband folks seemed to be the only ones getting it and releasing lots of full shows in a variety of ways for a decent price. Now if only the rest of the music world would fall in line.

"There's no reason it can't be both."

My mistake. I thought this was Josh's column and I know how he hates the dirty hippies.

I believe it was Charleton Heston who first said "damned dirty hippies." And then he saw a statue of Jerry Garcia buried in the sand and he knew we were all in trouble.
