According to Okayplayer.com, Legendary hip hop band The Roots have left Geffen records.

Questlove confirmed the group's departure from Geffen on an Australian radio show. In a candid and in depth interview, Quest details the band's struggle with Geffen and the music industry in general. "We've been asking for our emancipation from Geffen for a year now," Questlove announced. The Roots front man also confirmed that the band was not happy with several songs on their last album, The Tipping Point, and felt coerced to change their sound to appeal to a mass market audience. At this point, the band doesn’t know what the future holds. "I don't know what the hell we're gonna do," Quest says.

Although Quest says that their upcoming album, entitled Game Theory is almost completed, its most certainly will be tied up in this label mess.

But don't fret. There is light on the other side of the tunnel. The group is in a bidding war between labels, but he doesn’t know if the group is going to go with another major label or go the independent route. Also, The Roots have such a large independent following that they may not need label backing at all.

The Roots have always been the bastard child of the rap world, and they have been misunderstood by mainstream and the underground alike. Personally, I think that the group should go a label where they would be nurtured and their creative talents will be praised. The group would be a perfect fit on Stones Throw or Ubiquity, or even a UK-based label such as Big Dada.
