This is one more step down the path of destruction as foretold in the Book of Revelations.

I love Best Buy, I enjoy shopping there, and I think it's cool when they have something exclusive that I want at a great price. I don't order from Best Buy online, but I certainly would if there wasn't one near me and I wanted something they had. I used to like going into Tower Records, etc, and also independent stores, but once internet shopping became commonplace I would only 'window shop' at places like that. Why pay 30 or 40 percent more for something?

To the author of this piece, I don't think you've really clearly explained why you don't like Best Buy and/or exclusivity deals. You point out that Best Buy wins, the Police win, the consumer wins. Why is the lack of choice important at that point. It isn't as if all music is available only at Best Buy.

    resident hippie? gees!

anyway, these deals make me sad for reasons i can't quite put my finger on.

i haven't bought any of the best buy things for one simple reason: i don't shop at best buy. i can't stand the place. there isn't one within an hour of where i live anyway, so that makes it pretty easy.

i'm still luck enough to have some good independent stores near me, so when i buy stuff that's where i go.

I dunno if I'd ever make a good revolutionary. I guess it depends on how strongly I feel about something.

For example, there's something about corporate giants like Disney and Wal*mart that give me a little bit o' the willies -- yet I'll still patronize them. I think that they've found how to work this particular business model or that one and do it well to their advantage.

Sometimes in my little world, it's just as easy to be sheeple.

    Don't hate me because I'm wishy-washy.

    : )

Mary I'm the same way. I don't like the big chains and I do try to shop locally, but sometimes it is just easier (and cheaper) to drop by Walmart and get everything you need instead of trying several smaller local shops.

Just for Saleski I stopped by my local independent record shop yesterday. This is a place I frequented in my youth and loved. It has been a long while since I have been (sorry it was hard to visit when I've been living hundreds of miles away) and this trip was nothing but disappointing.

The selection of new CDs (and by new I'm referring to their lack of previous ownership not their release date) was amazingly thin. They had a much larger selection of used titles, but most of those were crap. Actually I felt like I was a teenager again as most of the titles were from the early 90s.

The clerk talked annoyingly and banally to some customer and seemed to know nothing about music. To be fair the owner wasn't there and he is really cool (or at least I remember him being cool.)

So strike one down for the little guy...they sucked.
