Eventually technology caught up with the fantasy, and in the late 1990s, Websites such as Ananova began to use a combination of digital animation and speech synthesis to have their own virtual newsreaders.
Speech synthesis is one thing, but Yamaha has recently introduced software that can recreate human singing. Combined with digital animation, can such technology be used to eventually create virtual pop stars? It's a topic I explore in my latest Tech Central Station article.
