The List of the Moment | the music right now

Okay: here is a brief list of songs I just can’t stop listening to lately, and maybe this is dull dull dull, but maybe, just maybe it will turn you onto something you don’t already know, which is highly unlikely but still possible, so that said; here is my list from what I listen to most and what I think of each song. There may be stuff here that is certainly not new, but so what? It’s still good in my view and I tried to only go back five years or so for most recent, which does not mean these are my favorite songs of the last five songs of the last five years, only that these come to mind this month, at this time.

The New Cobweb Summer – Lambchop – this song merited an entire blog from me and was worth every word I penned, or I felt so. Don’t go a summer without hearing it, even if you only listen to part of it online. By turns melancholy and sweet and hopeful. This one really grows on you and I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t like it. If you don’t, don’t tell me.

Hard Drive - Evan Dando – get the lyrics and listen to this one. A poem. a beautiful song and it sticks and the more I play it, the more I like it.

Her Shake – Adam Daniels – just a fun song to dance to in your underwear (okay, maybe you don’t do that) or whatever you do when you need to take a break. It’s the type of song that reminds you of a cool girl you know or knew, at least to me and it’s just perfect. It gets you going and the beginning just rocks.

Cigarettes Will Kill You – Ben Lee – how can you not love the line “I want a TV embrace.” A song about losing love, or it sounds like to me, or needing love and being screwed around too much which leads me to of course…

"New Cobweb Summer" is a fantastic slice of Lambchop, a favorite favorite band of mine.

Sadi, if you don't have the rest of the Is a Woman album, you should really check it out. "Cobweb" isn't even my favorite on this thematically and musically cohesive, great album.

It is, however, unique in the Lambchop catalog; musically, it's a totally different sound from their stuff before or since, which is much a more eclectic, guitary, version of Nashville soul. Kurt Wagner sure writes different lyrics from anyone else, huh?

Sadi, I just read your blog about "Cobweb," so I knwo you know all about the Lambchop. I wouldn't worry about them becoming too popular, though. seems improbable. You're so right about the impressionistic lyrics being evocative.

    It's so true.

I also love that GLBuffalo song " it seems so strangely straightforward, musically and lyrically. I mean, what kind of lover has to repeat "truly, truly, truly"? Is he afraid she won't believe he's being true? Who's he trying to convince?

I also love the sly double meaning of truly here. Is his statement that he loves her true? ("truly, I love you") Or does he love her in a way that is true? ("I love you truly")

And I think Ryan Adams gets a lot of shit from snobby rock fans, but he's actually pretty talented, and that's a cool song.

i think you're analysis of GL Buffalo is really interesting and i don't know the answer... i just find it all very i dunno, sort of GenX-y, but that's my generation so maybe i would... who knows. who cares.

but the other... yes, Ryan Adams gets a bad rap from snobby rock fans in some ways, though i think he borders on folk at least in Heartbreakerand it reminds me sort of of early John Cale (Paris 1919) and early Nick Drake combined... not sure why, but a similar tone of lyrics and such... but sweet and touching.

obviously, i like Bob Dylan more than anyone, but i won't include that here because that is a whole other piece etc etc. and i'm working on that for my Dylan site blah blah blah...

    your insights are really interesting.

where/what is the company you work for? i've been in publishing my whole life... just curious... you email me privately if you want...

Sadi, you are preaching to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir when it comes to Dylan. He is my favorite artist.

And I will drop you a line.

And I don't know the answers re: "Truly" either. I think that's why I like it.

makes good sense to me; do we need to know all the answers anyway? just need to keep a beat on the broad strokes and that's all or enough for me anyway....

cheers to you for reading and keeping this going...

    all best...

I love the Doves' inclusion. I did a review of their most recent album not long ago. I also had some fun and did a compare/ contrast of it with the new Oasis CD here.

I am a recent convert to the Ryan Adams world. I really love the Love is Hell set. I have been listening to Cold Roses a lot lately, too. I only recently got Heartbreaker and it is fantastic. I know many people consider it his best. I might as well, in time. Right now, I really love Love is Hell.

Ben Lee Rocks: just saw your comment; sorry, love the song Butterfly... reminds me of a french pop song too, by Charlelie Couture ... forget the name right now, but you can find it... something "sans aile.." 'dragonfly w/out wings in engish," it's easy to find...

Sade - if I were going to cull a few songs from "Love is Hell" I would start with the cover of "Wonderwall." FABULOUS. My other favourites are "Political Scientist," "World War 24," and "City Rain, City Streets." "Afraid Not Scared" and "This House is Not for Sale" are also good as is the title cut.

There are a couple songs on there I thought were clunkers, but overall I really like this set a lot.

i forgot about Wonderwall and was just listening to it yesterday durr!!! so yes, include that too, though lately i'm going through this awful seventies revival thing with like Juice Newton and stuff like that... can you believe? '

    quelle bizarre

Love Is Hell is possibly my second favourite Ryan Adams record, after Heartbreaker. stand-out tracks, you say? "English Girls Approximately" (dylan-esque title for a dylan-esque tune), I See Monsters (possibly the most beautiful song he's ever written), Thank You Louise, The Shadowlands, Wonderwall, Political Scientist.

    Great great great record.

Totally agree on the recommendation of Hard Drive - Ben Lee is a wonderful songwriter and Evan does an amazing job on that track.

yeah, obviously i'm a big fan of that song also... really like it a great deal, so i'm into it. i need to get more of his stuff: any recommendations for specific songs? i'd be grateful -= should note, along the lines of that particular one, "hard drive."

    thanks....:)
