The Friday Morning Listen: Meaghan Smith - The Cricket's Quartet EP

Part of: Friday Morning Listen

A couple of days ago, I woke up in the middle of the night with what felt like a sinus headache. The smart thing to do would have been to drag my sorry ass out of bed and chow down on some generic ibuprofen (what's with the shocking orange color on those suckers these days?). But of course, I managed to convince myself that turning over on my side, things would clear up.

Right.

A few hours later I came to with a lovely set of migraine symptoms: nausea, dizziness, light sensitivity. Hmmmm... just a few days before this I'd made a joke to a coworker about how the migraines I had in my youth had gone away right around the time of my divorce (Hey, it's sort of true...give or take a year or two). Maybe I should keep my trap shut about these things.

Anyhow, I saw TheWife™ off to work, sent a "see you tomorrow" email to the office, and fell back into bed. I slept until 11:30. The migraine was still having its way with me, so I forced down a small bowl of granola & soy milk (food sometimes helps, but it feels like the enemy at the time) and went back to bed. A little while later I woke and and Eureka!!! No migraine! Oh crap... it's 3:30! Nothing like losing most of a day, which I suppose is fine since I hardly remembered any of it anyway.

I spent the rest of the afternoon in a deep state of grog, sipping tea on the couch and reading Bukowski's Factotum. The old geezer's misery seemed comforting.

None of this really explains why I had the urge to listen to Meaghan Smith today. If you've never had a migraine (count your blessings!) let me just say that the experience goes far beyond pain. It's just plain weird. It's hard for me to believe that I spent most of my early life having one or two of them every week. Just one though, is more than enough to put a very strange aura on an entire week. Smith puts a modern spin on music that seems like it could have been recorded decades earlier. Maybe I'm attracted to that sense of dislocation.

That was lovely. The song I mean, not your writing. Well, I mean the writing was good too, but I really enjoyed that little song :)

Like you, I came across this by accident, and was quite taken by the little e.p. I'm quite curious as to what an album's worth of material will sound like ... but this was pretty cool.
