In the past, I have described the feeling of transitioning from the work week to the resting break as "falling into the weekend." This is exactly what I feel like today. Events have conspired to produce torrents of mental noise. It's very bad when you're sitting around on a Tuesday afternoon daydreaming about how good it'll feel to be lolling in bed on Saturday morning. I'm not fond of wishing away days. Heck you only get so many of them.
What I do know is that I'm not alone in this feeling that life and work sometimes get a little weird. What can be really bad about this is the sense of loss of control — a bad situation made so much worse by the fact that you feel somehow both disconnected and chained to your fate.
The good news here that I've done some solid work that has put me well on the way to gaining some control. It's just that at the moment I imagine myself one of those plate spinners on the old Ed Sullivan show.
One thing that disturbs me about this crazed state is that it makes me feel like nothing out there is genuine anymore. Cynicism is a powerful and ever-present element in our society and I do my best to avoid it. When I get the sensation that everybody has been "taken over" (a la "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"), well...it's time for a big dose of sincerity.
That's where Kimya Dawson pretty much made my week. I picked up Remember That I Love You a couple of days ago and it has totally blown my clouds of cynicism away. I mean, you just can't get much more direct than these songs. The turning point came during "The Competition," where Kimya sings "I rode my bike like lightning/And I made cappuccinos that would make the angels sing."
Cappuccinos that would make the angels sing.
...that was all I needed.
