A loving child, an interesting book, a peaceful surrounding, and melodious music, are all that I long for.
Music, though it has taken the last place in this list, is of prime importance to me. I had been learning music since the age of four, to put it precisely, before I could talk properly, I was initiated into music.
My family has a long association with classsical music of South india, typically known as carnatic music, right rom my grandfather's time. Some of us have taken up to the instrumental, vocal, or dancing, all purely classical during our childhood. So we breathed music, we inhaled and we let out musical rhythms knowingly or unknowingly.
That being so, not a day passes that I don't hear music and a brief interruption also gives me a discomfort that I find hard to explain.
A masterpiece of Saint Thiagaraja in the raga Mohanam, captivated me in today's recital broadcasted by All India Radio. It was rendered by M.S. Subbalakshmi, the renowned musician and affectionately referred to as "Queen of music " in our part of the world.
The rendition of the beautiul raga was so melodious, I lost myself in the charm that it delineated.The rise and fall of the voice was so well modulated, that I experienced a trance during the short five minute interlude of the raga alapana.
Following this blissful moment, I did undergo another metamorphical transition when she began to sing the kiritana. The saint composer, extolls the qualities of Rama, as he waded through the waters of the river cauvery.
Saint Thiagaraja, singing the song , made a dashing journey through the roaring waters, mightily unaware of the engulfing tides and slippery soil. He made it to his destination, with closed eyes and blind faith.
The passionate recital went deep into the heart creating a sensation that could not be expressed.
Sometimes words do fail us. More so, this moment.
