Eric, what do you mean by "Roots-derived"?

Music derived from indiginous, pre-rock musical styles: country, blues, soul, folk, older jazz styles, regional styles like cajon, Tejano, zydeco, etc. R.E.M. doesn'treally fit this, but they were the most "jangly" and rootsy of the new wave era (not counting neo-rockabilly).

Cricky. Throw in Web Wilder and Johnny Winter and they'd have em an official wang-dang-doodle. Thanks for the tip on Doc Watson Eric. The man is a finger picking machine.
