Hidden deep in the land down under, The Beautiful Girls are Australia’s answer to the States’ surf-lovin’ hippies Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. Hailing from Sydney, the band released debut Morning Sun and the Goodtimes EP in 2002, following up with the Blackbird Ep the following year. The latter release foreshadowed 2004's Learn Yourself, offering another folk/blues/roots album in the key of The Specials, Nick Drake and Sublime.
Standout tracks include “Freedom (Part 2),”a duet with recent tour mate Mason Jennings, and “On Judgement Day,” a track recorded in singer Mat McHugh’s kitchen. “La Mar (The Ocean)” brings a stronger essence of BH and JJ than the two do themselves on recent releases. On Learn Yourself, the Beautiful Girls manage to both ace their niche and soothe the soul.
