Single Review: Maroon 5 "This Love"

Adam Levine's on-again, off-again relationship with his girlfriend is truly over in the defeated "This Love."

A chugging guitar open the single, creating a haggard tone. Levine says the breakup blindsided him. He knew she was ticked about something. No matter what he said, he would receive an angry glare from her. It worried to him as he ran through his actions. She left one night while he was sleeping. She said 'goodbye' in his ear and wrote him a letter. As he read the letter the next morning, he found out that she took an early morning flight back home. She's going to stay there for good. He was in love with her and planning a future with her. He will always miss her.

"I was so high I did not recognize/The fire burning in her eyes/The chaos that controlled my mind/Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane/Never to return again/But always in my heart."

In the chorus, a spurned Levine says the relationship wore him out anyway. It's her loss. She's dumped him at least five times within the past couple years. This time, he's not going to let it hurt him. In the letter, she said that she had been heartbroken for a while. He retorts that he's upset because she put him through it all.

"This love has taken its toll on me/She said goodbye too many times before/And her heart is breaking in front of me/I have no choice 'cause I won't say goodbye anymore."

In the second verse, he says she had a high sex drive. She wanted to have sex every night. He obliged her and made sure she reached orgasm each time. However, it wasn't enough. He feels like she tolerated him. She treated the relationship like chess. When it was her move, she would say the right thing and then it would be his turn. He would tell her he loved her and she would parrot it back. Meanwhile, she was thinking of the of how she would be able to leave their house without him knowing.

" I tried my best to feed her appetite/Keep her coming every night/So hard to keep her satisfied/Kept playing love like it was just a game/Pretending to feel the same/Then turn around and leave again."

In the bridge, he says he would dust off the toolbox and buy the parts for the leaking sink. He wants to find out why she's goes every time they seem to get close. She is capable of having a physical relationship with him, not an emotional one. If she flew back, that's how she would apologize.

"I'll fix these broken things/Repair your broken wings/And make sure everything's all right/My pressure on your hips/Sinking my fingertips/Into every inch of you/'Cause I know that's what you want me to do."

The chorus is sung three times to end the song.
