Single Review: "I H8 U" - Spitshine

I have been listening to a lot of songs on Myspace recently. Being in the music biz, even as loosely as I am right now gets me in contact with a LOT of indie artists and I like to preview their material. My girlfriend/partner Tara is always on the lookout for promising acts as she surfs the web too and she focuses mostly on bands outside of NYC. So I get exposed to the best of both worlds that way. Me with my fixation on the NYC indie rock scene and her with everything else.

The other day she asked me to listen to a song from a band named Spitshine from Bethlehem, PA. I pulled up their profile and listened to the songs they have available on their Myspace player and was immediately interested in the song "I H8 U." Even though I haven't gotten a copy of their EP, talked to them, or heard them live that song had the kind of sound that makes for a potential hit and it got me thinking.

I have wanted for some time to be able to let my readers know about songs like this but have always done either live reviews or reviews on whole EP's not just one song. Of course there is a whole process involved in that and it is hard to make any kind of meaningful dent in the huge amount of really good material there is out there. So I thought I'd try to do reviews of individual songs when I find ones I like and not bother with getting the band's EP or seeing them live. I think this will give me a lot more flexibility and reach in what I do and what I can bring to the attention of my readers.

Spitshine put out their EP transaudio in 2004 and have been playing together in 2001 when they released their self titled debut album. I think that their song "I H8 U" is stand alone great. It has the kind of gritty, in your face feeling to it that would make the NYC punk rock crowd happy. If you want a sound comparison think maybe the Ramones.
