Single Review: Ashlee Simpson "L.O.V.E."

Ashlee Simpson is grateful for her girlfriends' support during her boy troubles in the frivolous "L.O.V.E."

An aloof electronic beat opens the single, setting a prowling tone. Simpson's vocals, which sound they were recorded through a megaphone, says the song is going to about love.

"I'm talkin' 'bout love."

In the first verse, she asks her girlfriends to gather together in a circle. She's dedicating her new song to them. She shared details of her first kiss with them and the tears when a boy dumped her for another girl. Her current boyfriend hasn't returned any of her calls. He doesn't let her know where he is or what he does. She brushes it off. It doesn't matter how mean he is. He's disposable. Her friends are not.

"All my girls stand in a circle and clap your hands this is for you/Ups and downs highs and lows, no matter what you see me through/My boyfriend, he don't answer on the telephone/I don't even know where the hell he goes/But all my girls we're in a circle and nobody's gonna break through."

In the chorus, she spells out the word "love" and says it her topic for the day.

"L,O,L,O,L,O ,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O/Oh did you hear me say?/L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O/Did you hear me say/L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O/I'm talkin' 'bout/L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O."

After the chorus, the megaphonic vocals return. Simpson hopes her girlfriends will be with her until she's old and gray.

"I'm talkin' bout love/Say you'll be my girls for life, girls for life."

While hanging out at the bar, she says she needs another drink. Then, she buys her a friend a drink, too. She asks her friend to get the money to pay for the drinks out her purse. She says a guy is mostly an accessory to her. He's fun to have around. But ten more like him will arrive at the bar. She expects her boyfriend to give her a call any second. He calls at least once and usually late at night. However, she wants to forget about him. She buys drinks for all her friends. Her friendship with them is closer than any she had with a boyfriend.

"Oh hold off I need another one/I think you, you do too/Grab my bag, got my own money/Don't need any man in this room/My boyfriend he'll be calling me now anytime/I need all my girls to keep him off my mind/So hold up we need another one/What we got is all good."

After the chorus, the megaphonic vocals again return.

"I'm talkin' 'bout love/
I'm talkin' bout love."

Immediately, the bridge follows. Simpson divulge what love means to her. It's something that can't be defined or understood. It's supposed to be honest. Love is something she feels inside her and what keeps her going. She feels that it's the most valuable emotion.

" Love is an energy, love is a mystery/Love is meant to be true/Love is a part of me, love is the heart of me/Love is the best thing we do."

The chorus is sung twice, with the second time with "did you hear me say" replaced by "I'm talkin' 'bout."

"L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E....Oh did you hear me say?/L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O/I'm talkin' 'bout/L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O/I'm talkin''bout/L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O/I'm talkin' 'bout/L,O,L,O,L,O,L.O.V.E/L,O,L,O,L,O."

"L.O.V.E." is thoroughly mindless yet oodles of fun. A night out with the girls, a topic that has become cliche, is fresh with the spacey electro arrangment. Simpson's digitally altered (more so than usual) vocals are clipped and hedonistic.
