Matahari has an entire Shrine of Counterfeits to expose. Their new album is oozing with the power and sensuality of rock music (with a definite alternative slant). I think the European vocalist Ivona Coufalova has a lot to do with their charisma and appeal. I checked out a video on their site, and believe me her voice is not the only thing that will knock you out! There is nothing more blood pumping than a good rock band with some balls fronted by an attractive female lead singer, and one that knows how to move and make every song and adventure to observe. It seems as though Ms. Coufalova has her act down. I thought of The Divinyls and their little vixen Christina Amphlett while listening to Coufalova. She has that same expressive pout that Amphlett purred so effectively on the 80s hit “Touch Myself.”
The rest of the band are no slouches either, they rock hard behind Coufalova and give her something to work with on every song. Chris Anderson and Matt Scurfield split up the percussion duties while pounding you into submission with Frank Couture on bass.
I think the magic happened in a big way for this band in the studio and to say they capitalized on that momentum would be an understatement. This is an unyielding recording and it will surely catch some ears-hopefully those that have some influence in the music biz.
