Shadows (don't) Fall on the new album

The War Within
Shadows Fall
(Century Media)

This lot are supposedly one of the leading lights of NWOAHM and I can see why. While they may not do anything that hasn't been done before, they do what they do very well indeed. It hits all the right American heavy metal buttons and has enough variety to make it an enjoyable listen. Like many a good album, this one does improve greatly with age. There are subtleties that do not show up on first listen. Futhermore, unlike many of this sort of band, Brain Fair can actually sing. While not having a range like Bruce Dickinson, he does vary his singing enough to keep away from the monotony that can so often blight this type of release. Overall, a damn fine metal album from a rather good band. I shall be listening to this lot for quite a while.
