Rush fans rejoice! September 23 sees the first official concert DVD release by the band, Rush In Rio, a 2-disc set featuring the Nov. 23 concert recorded by the band specifically for this release. Rush previously had plans to issue a video counterpart to the Different Stages 3-CD set from the Test For Echo tour, but video problems prevented that from happening. Rush decided to make up for it on the recent Vapor Trails tour by preparing a visual feast on 2 DVDs, then topped it off by suddenly adding another 3-CD set to accompany it.
However, if you're a die-hard Rush fan like I am, you are torn by this news - it's great to get another official live release, but seeing the band break its "4 studio albums followed by a live album" pattern is a little saddening. The live album has characteristically functioned as a palette cleanser for Rush, who would return to the studio following the release to steer the band in a slightly different direction than the previous 4 albums. The Vapor Trails tour, however, proved to be one of the stronger tours the band has embarked upon in ages, bolstered by the fan-approval of an impressive comeback album. To not mark the outing with a live set would be a shame for both the band and fans.
Girlfriends and wives of Rush fans everywhere are reported to be greeting the news with groans of displeasure.
