I got a better essay for you why is Justin Timberlake being considered the new King of Pop? Nothing he's done in his career has come close to touching Michael Jackson's achievements in sales and awards. Justin can't even touch his own contemporary Usher's record sales. That's right these types of blogs only get off on attacking black women. Now, let me see if you're going to have the balls to go after the great white hope.

Racism and sexism needs to end.
28 - Sara
Subjective and unbalanced coverage of black people isn't fair. Why do those in the media think it's right to try to discredit black accomplishments but will not hold up the same light to white accomplishments?

I absolutely agree. Beyonce can be the most popular woman as her fans wanted her to be BUT she'll never be so talented as other true ARTISTS. You, the fans, must learn to Live it with that.
Beyonce Sales aren't more globally. She's nobody in all Latinoamerica.
And it's not about hating on Beyonce, it's just the awful truth 'Beyonce Mafia'.

you're absolutley retarded... you're comparing OLD ASS albums to beyonces new 2003 album... those albums were hella old.. when it was EASIAR to sell cds and Less burning of cds were going on..you're facts are retarded.. it doesnt matter.. i bet you lauryn hill if she cam eout with an album right now.. it wouldnt go 8 million for sure.. mariahs new one didny.. nor did norah jones second cd.. so shut ur face? k thx bye love youuu

I want to emphasis that there is true Talent when listening to the voices of diva's such as Mariah Careh and Toni Braxton and deserves all the credits. Beyonce is damn talented in terms of performance in overall. Her voice does not compare to the true diva's as such but the chances are that she could make it but it will be with a support of some rap artist. The whatever machines she seems to be using will soon spit her like a wasted gum. What will she have to hold onto? Her voice! Big no, no. True divas like Toni still had their voice to hold onto. Who can ignore the angelic voice of Mariah?
32 - Clayton Perry
The simple fact, sir/madame, is that, despite the massive PR machine that perpetually propels Beyonce into the spotlight, her numbers don't match up with all the hype. Granted, many of the albums are from the pre-Napster/iTunes era. However, Norah Jones' debut, Come Away With Me, came only ONE year before Beyonce's Dangerously In Love. [Come Away With Me was released on February 26, 2002 and Dangerously In Love was released on June 24, 2003.] Regardless of the shifting dynamics of the industrial landscape or commercial sales, there is no excuse. Norah went diamond, with over 10 million in U.S. sales, and Beyonce sold only 4 million. One year of technological advancement does not account for roughly the large gap, considering the PR blitzes unleashed Beyonce's camp. C'mon, sir/madame. This was supposed to be her BREAKOUT album-- shedding her "less-talented" Destiny Child "tag-a-longs". And you mean to tell me that she's only moving 317,000 copies "out the gate" and 4 million over 3 years?!? Face it... Beyonce's sales don't match the hype of the MASSIVE Knowles marketing machine.

just cant wait till she gets an oscar for dream girls and see what y'all haters wil say

i respect beyonce and all but i agree with this article she s getting too much publicity and people think she s "all that" where all and all so many artists have done so much more and indured much more troubles and get where they are today and get no promotion (ie, toni braxton)
35 - Liscious
Totally agree with this article and in support of "Fred". True what you say there. Toni has a beautiful voice, distinct - I mean there is no other voice like hers but had a downfall but true talent won't fade away. She's back and doing well in balance. Mariah careh has gone through the same and came out much more stronger. Whitney however had a rough time but her situation is different - voice gone due to drugs! I'm no hater of Beyonce infact, I have all the singles she released but this B'day ulbum thing gives a good sign of where she's going. Did i mention down the drain? No, but she's not a diva. She is just the next Britney - in your face whether you like it or not! The media keeps them going not the talent.
36 - Ross
That had to be some of the most ignorant shit i've heard in a long time. You sound just like a tru hata for real!!! Instead of knocking what she hasn't accomplished, Yet, give her props for what she has a-hole. The fact of the matter is she has one awards, regardless solo or with a group. How many do you have? Diva
37 - joe
totally and absolutely agree. Beyonce is talented, no doubt, but too much publicly exposed, she`s everywhwre and it`s tiring...
38 - Renee39120
Beyonce is not a diva, she is a REVOLUTIONARY ICON Don't get that twisted. You are obviously jealous. You saying that she didn't win those awards on her own is a lie-- when Beyonce sang with destinys child she used her own voice, immaculate talents, and genius. So yes, she does have 11 grammys and she earned ALL of them. What Beyonce has done may not blend in with the mediocre success of other so called divas you named and I'm gladf she dont!!! If she did she wouldn't be who she is. The fact that she has started and followed her own path is what puts her waay over the rest. She's SPECIAL and she's priceless. She is music's PROMISED CHILD, a rock solid bonafide artist. She has 100x's the beauty, 100x's the talent, and 100x's the blessing it takes to continue to aspire in front and inspite of all you HATERS.
She won 5 Grammys on one night with all for her own solo album. Besides who needs to go diamond when they have 140 million units sold in record sales!!!! Lauryn went diamond but "Where is she now?"!!!(he he)Janet? Paleease!!! She is not talented nor is she an original artist. She is the surrogate child of plastic surgery and and a huge bitter from her brother Micheal. If I were music I would have only one question for Janet, maybe two.
1) What have you done for me lately?
2) Out of all that you have done, how much of it was of substance?
You get me?....
You're take on her collaborations are tacky, trashy, and stupid and all together unfazing. You should have given her CREDIT in your article and you could have been mistaken as a true critic. Beyonce is the collabo queen. Who else has done that? Beyonce is the best and when you put the best with the best, MAGIC is DESTINED to happen. AND? The rest is HISTORY.
Who can't listen to Beyonce with their eyes closed? It must be you because 140 million records surely don't testify to that. She sold 17 million albums on her own and to be quite honesyt with you she could easily take credit for all her MEGA SAMASH HITS like Independent Woman, Survivor, and 95% of all of Destiny's Child's success. We all know that Without Beyonce, DC would've only sold about 10 million albums. Need proof? What have the rest of them done solo? You get the picture. Moving along- Where did Janet get her dances from? Micheal. Where did Micheal get his dances from? James Brown. Where did James Brown get his dances from? Elvis. I rest my case !!!!!!! Whoever Beyonce takes her cues from it is evidence that that it would be Tina, Barbara Streisand, diana Ross; it's fluid- meaning that each one of their crowns started somewhere and where handed down and passed along in afluid manner to the next naturally possessed artist. Beyonce is a product of greatness. No bull****!!
It is evident that Beyonce is SOOOO HUGE and TALENTED and FLAWLESS that you have to become what a scientist is to a preacher-- a victim of flawed research!! Take it. Accept it. Slam it. From the looks and the proof of it if Beyonce isn't a DIVA is because she is not hot air, vanity, and smoke sceens. It's because she is a character possessing, god-fearing, elegant, classy, pioneering, seriious, and self respecting young woman. She is cut from the best fur/ she is royalty/Yes sir. You can't buy that shit, you either have it or you dont.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Turns out Beyonce's birthday is not just a celebration for the singer, but for the whole music industry.
The No. 1 bow by her second solo album, "B'Day," also signals the first time in four months that album sales beat those of the comparable 2005 sales week.
Released September 5, the day after her 25th birthday, it opens with 541,000 copies, 59 percent more than the 317,000 first-week sales that greeted her first solo album, "Dangerously in Love," in 2003.
There was only one period in the seven-album career of her group, Destiny's Child, when she had a larger sales week: Third set "Survivor" began at 663,000 in May 2001.
The improvement over her first solo album's start is no surprise. With this record arriving just a few months before her starring role in "Dreamgirls" hits screens in December, Beyonce's celebrity has never been greater, fetching beaucoup ink in magazines and newspapers.
Her August 31 performance at MTV's Video Music Awards set the stage for "B'Day." The video for second single "Ring the Alarm" was MTV's most-played clip during release week (29 plays) and also was among the 10 most-played videos at BET and VH1 Soul. The song enters the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 12, her highest debut either solo or with Destiny's Child.
Beyonce's opening sum is the best Nielsen SoundScan week by any solo artist this year. It is the third-largest total by any 2006 album, exceeded only by Rascal Flatts' "Me and My Gang" (722,000) and Tool's "10,000 Days" (564,000).
"B'Day" is the fifth album in 2006 to start in the half-million-plus club, compared with four during the first 36 sales weeks of 2005.
RISING TIDE
Beyonce's "B'Day" becomes the 25th album to bow at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2006, but it manages a feat few of those have accomplished. Namely, it paces a gain over last year's same-week album sales.
Mind you, it's a slim gain of less than 1 percent, but a victory, nonetheless.
This signals the first uptick over comparable-week 2005 album volume since May and the first since April that wasn't triggered by a holiday shift.
The Mother's Day spike of 7.9 percent posted in the week that ended May 14 was a mirage, as the gift-giving occasion happened a week later in 2006 than it did in 2005. Similarly, the 20 percent advance reported for the week ending April 16 compared this year's Easter frame to a non-holiday week.
The two weeks leading up to Easter were the last occasions before now when album volume rose without the benefit of a calendar quirk.
In the one that ended April 2, when rapper T.I. bowed at No. 1 with a 522,000-unit start for "King," album sales were up by 4 percent over the same 2005 frame. A week later, the 700,000-plus start for the aforementioned Rascal Flatts album led a 15 percent rise in album volume.
Those advances were the first ones posted since the very first stanza of 2006, a rally that followed consecutive gains in the tracking weeks that ended with Christmas and New Year's Day.
Now that a crowded list of A-level talent is releasing albums in the last four months of the year, can the industry cut the 5 percent gap from last year's album pace? Not a safe bet, because the last four months of any year are chock-full of new superstar albums.
In the last trimester of 2003, a September-December rally that included new releases from the likes of OutKast, Alicia Keys, Toby Keith, the Beatles and Clay Aiken cut the prior-year album gap from 8.5 percent at the end of August to a more digestible 3.6 percent deficit by year's end.
But in 2004, almost all of the 7.2 percent gain over prior-year sales built during the first eight months got coughed up, slimming to a mere 1.3 percent lead by the year's 52nd week, despite a high-profile parade during the last four months that included new albums from U2, Shania Twain, Green Day and Ray Charles.
The gap in prior-year album sales increased slightly during the last four months of 2001 and 2002, but narrowed during the last trimester of 2005.
This year's march continues in the coming week with Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/ LoveSounds," which like "B'Day" had an initial shipment of 1.3 million and is projected to start with sales of around 600,000.

I Agree 100% ..... Beyonce & Any Other New Artists Must Earn The Title Diva... She Still Has A Long Way To Go.... But No Doubt She'll Make It Eventully, Right Now Shes Just A Diva In Training !!! Sales Are The Most Important But It Also Takes Attitude, Respect, Celebrity, Etc. To Be Called A Diva !!!
42 - curt
Maybe bee is not a diva, or a legend but she is only 25, only had one solo album and still sold 4 million in a music slump. People forget that. The girl sold 4 million in the US on her debut album in a industry selling slump and she has the 3rd highest selling album the first week and in a music industry slump. You can not compare record sales to now. People burn CDs, buy bootlegs, download CDs and listen to them without having to buy the album. Is she all that? Ok, she is not. Fine. Has she accomplish a lot and has the potential to accomplish more? Yeah. Even you admit that she is talented so that is not an issue and if she wants to stay in the business she has longevity because her ability to perform. Maybe she goes to Vegas and keep her name out there if she fall off like J5 did back in the day. The point is she can perform like no other and that will keep her there even if her record sales aren't the highest.

Oooo, this critic is so against Beyonce. However,I agree with some facts, but CRAZY IN LOVE IS MY FAVOURITE SONG IN LAST 10 YEARS!!!It will be always on my favourite mp3's playlist.
That song is so big and strong, with or without Jay Z on it.It wasn't popular 'cause Jay has few intereting sentences on it.So powerful melody,so awesome song and video, too.Destiny's child weren't so popular 'cause of Kelly or Michell,Le Toya...the main reason for adoring them was Beyonce.Group is nothing without her.Look, most LP's copies buy teens, that's why Britney or some female group like Destiny's have that selling results.C'mon Beyonce is so better solo...
I agree that new album isn't perfect, has NO strong singles, but her voice on it is so beatiful and melodic.
True, she is gettin' public too much,we are little tired with her in our lives every day...
Your critic is pretty negative about her.
47 - Obvious
So what if she isn't a diva? That isn't something she should be aspiring to. Secondly, she stated she wasn't a diva in an interview, so your article is a waste. You spend so much time disqualifying her for a title she has no interesting in placing on herself.
LMAO at 8 octave range!!!! HAHHAHAHAHA. That is a big lie. She is an excellent singer in any case.

Articles like this really get under my skin. I'm sick and tired of people discounting the true talents of Beyonce. Beyonce is a Diva. She was the star of Destiny's Child. And rightfully so, if I left a 6 figure a year job to manage a girl group, my baby would be front and center too. She is the talent that all up and coming singers/entertainers are chasing.
Name one new artist that can hold a candle to Lady B. There is not one. Beyonce is well on her way, she is a true artist. She can sing, dance and write. In addition, this young women sells every single performance. Can Ashanti hold a candle to Be? Don't make me laugh. Can Alicia hold a key to Be? She's pretty but that's not enough. Can Latoya or Fantasia hold a key to Lady B? That's definitely a rhetorical question.
Lady B, is a diva- She can give it to you like Whitney, Aretha, Janet and even Josephine Baker. Yes Josephine ( see the de ja vue video). When another young upcoming star can dethrone her, that article than and only than, will carry some validity.
49 - reggie von woic
lets just say that Beyonce is not a diva...yet and leave it at that.
i'm sorry but please don't even capitalize the "b" in beyonce when it occurs in the same sentence as Mariah, Whitney, Alanis or ARETHA-that's just insulting to the real divas.
nice research Renee, comment #38.
scroll up you guys!

Some of you young people don't don't really know what you are talking about. You all only know what is current and just fail to veiw the history of what has made what's here today. If it wasn't for the legend artist like Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Glady's Knight, Prince, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross and Barry White
many of the top artist wouldn't be here.
Yes, Beyonce has used her group members to get on top. Then used other artist to get record sales. She has used them with them knowing what her intentions were. Beyonce isn't a Diva.
She is milking the entertainment industry for her benifit.
52 - I Know You See It
I think that when your father is the manager of the group, your mother is the "stylist" (and I do use that word loosely, lol), and you kick out other talented members of the group (letoya luckett, etc...); that there is a good chance you're gonna be perceived as the most "talented".
I think it's pretty obvious that Destiny's Child was a vehicle to launch Beyonce's solo career, especially after the success of "Writings On the Wall".
I also think that one way Beyonce can prove that she deserves this "Diva" status is by touring ALONE...
All the greats have.
53 - Mrsmoovbrotha
This argument is completely ridiculous. First of all you cant compare Beyonce's record sales to those of Mariah Carey, and Toni Braxton. The top artist of today are not selling as many records as those of the early 90s. Yea they are few, Eminem, 50 cent, but for the most part album sales are down across the entire industry. 4 million records is pretty good compared to how much the top female artists are now selling, not to mention the millions of records Beyonce has sold so far. In comparisont to christinia can we really consider her debut accredited to her talents alone or the teen pop phenomenon that was going on in the late 90's. It must be note that Stripped Christinia's Stripped album sold 4 million copies to, and didnt have as nearly as many #1 hits as Beyonce's Dangeroulsy In Love. Christinia first CD was when all the teen acts were selling millions of records including Beyonce with Destiny's Child(8 million sold) Nora Jones and Lauryn Hill cant be considered divas because their music for the most part is not played on mainstream pop radio. Since when has Nora had the number song in the country. A diva is someone whose music nto only sales well but can be promoted to a super popular artist whose can be attched to anything or any product and make it sell well. They do not necesarily have to sell the most records but they gain so much media attention because they are truly want the overall public, not just their fanbase, wants to see. They are in movies, in commercials, on the cover magazines, and many other media outlets not just related to music. Beyonce has been able to establish herself as that kind of artist; therefore she is a diva. She has appeared in pepsi commercials, number one movies, and sold millions of records worldwide. As of now the only music divas are Christinia Aguilara, Shakira, and Beyonce. Britney used to be a diva, but now is just a taloid queen.
54 - James
I agree with everything the article said. Beyonce is not a true DIVA. And yes, she can sing, but not like the Big 4:Aretha, Patti, Whitney, and Mimi, anyone who says otherwise is sick!
55 - tony
One of the biggest diva's of our time is Miss Diana Ross and to-date, she has not won a single Grammy her entire career. I only mention this because that was used as an argument to strip Beyonce of her diva-status.
I agree that she's yet to make a memorable, or signature song, but she's young and learning. I can say there is a Beyonce' feel with her music, that has to count for something.

beyonce was not up for nomin for best new artist at the grammy awards in 2004 because she is not new as a artist she was first a member of desting's child and then she did a song called work it out so thats why she was not up for nomin and she has just done two albums and the next grammys are next year but she has won 5 grammys al ready and she will all ways win 3 in each album she does, but watch out her new album b'day wil get 6 includin record and album watch and see how a real superrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrstar is and a oscar.bless god
63 - ray
You fail to notice that ALL the artists you have compared with Beyonce's debut albums have been released MUCH LONGER, and the artists THEMSELVES have been out much longer! you have to take these things into perspective for a powerful argument!
64 - Shaun
The comments made are vey unfortunate. What is left out and not noted is that with the advent of the internet and internet music downloads, album sales have significantly decreased. You can therefore not compare the sale of albums released in the 90's to those released in the past 5 years. Piracy has become big business, Beyonce's album was even widely available on the internet long before its release.
We therefore have to remember the context; the music industry has changed. Comparing the Billboard Charts of 10yrs and the present is evidence of that. Today its difficult for any artist to get a diamond-selling album. During the 90's it was a different story and a multitude of artist were able to get some. I bet you havent thought of that.

who cares that beyonce won 9 grammys with other people they hers. this article was pointless beyonce is a true artist her voice is incredible i don't know why people hatin on her obeviously you can't do what she do so of course lets hate on her and compare her to the divas in the past sorry this is a new time and day and BEYONCEis or diva all you people always want to criticize somebody put your self in her shoes and have to read all the negative things people have to say. This article really pisses me off and i can capitialize the damn B cause she is hottttt and her new album just changed the game forget sales and all that dumb shit u just wrote u jackass her voice is bangin and shes gonna do big things something u can't do cuz u hatin writing this dumb ass article!!!!!!

SHE IS A DIVA. I THINK THIS. WHAT YOU THINK? IT'S NO MATTER TO ME. ONLY WHAT I FEEL WHEN I HEAR HER SONG, EVERY SONG THAT SEH SING, SAY ME THAT SHE IS A DIVA.
67 - Scott
First, I want to say that Beyonce has a very nice voice. Much better than Ashanti, Britney, or any of the other bubblegum contempories mentioned. The direction she has chosen to go with her music (transitioning from "singer" music to "performer" music) is where she has left much to be desired.
The industry has pushed forward the societal ideal that the "best artists" of today have to do EVERYTHING. Beyonce is an above average singer, a below average dancer, and a mediocre overall performer. She is not judged musically off of her fan-base or her beauty, but off of her product. Considering she's a really good singer, would it kill someone to actually put on song on her album that accentuates her voice? I feel we miss the best part of Beyonce in her effort to show how "superstar" and how many different hats she can put up.
It is very difficult for our young generation to understand what makes music great. We've been watered-down by artists with zero creativity, slim-to-none drive, a synthesizer and a repeated beat. Producers make great SOUNDING music today, but once upon a time, it was the artist who MADE this song. And out of respect to the artists of the past and the few artists of today who do MAKE their songs, you won't ever hear me applaud "products" like Beyonce or anything like it.
68 - IP
fantastic, illuminating piece. And I dig Beyonce as a songwriter, but this really puts some perspective on her stardom
69 - Jay
This article was pointless. Beyonce doesn't desire to be a DIVA, so I really don't understand what this article was trying to prove. And I find it very peculiar that you so happen to leave out a lot of other info, such as her worldwide record sales. But oh well, what can you expect from the usual HATERS.
70 - KatyKane
I'm a Beyonce fan but I really don't have enough energy to critically analyze her career. But I will say this, what's wrong with great sounding music? Maybe that's where music is going, where the real superstars are the producers. I love Beyonce's music because it's fun and sassy. And maybe that's what the generation is about, being young, successful and confident.Beyonce's success and even hip-hop in general reflects what the society values:youth, success, beauty and independence. But to be honest I really don't understand what the big deal is. Let the girl live her life and sell her records, if you don't like it then change the station. But to me every time I see her own tv or a magazine it reminds me that it's okay to dream big and to pursue it with everything inside you. I don't feel a huge connection with "the great 4" because when they were popular I was too young to care. I mean I liked there music and I still know all the words to their songs, but I don't feel like they represent me as a young black woman. But this is silly, I don't need to explain why I am a fan. There are several artist other than Beyonce that deserve to be put on the stand (such as the Mickey Mouse club compadres:britney, christina and justin, out of all three of them Christina is the only one that can sing)

This was a CRAP article. The author is nothing but a BEYONCE hater, let's just face it...and why are we continuing to make comparisons...no two people are alike, not even identical twins. Beyonce is her own person, she's different from the rest of the "divas" mention. Furthermore, I bet some of the people mentioned as divas, don't want to be characterized that way, who even cares about being a diva, other then flammers!!!!
73 - Nakyta
I agree 100% until you say and I quote "Beyoncé’s music can not be appreciated with one’s eyes closed. Although I wish Beyonce's lyrics had more depth and Volume like Whitney Houston's and Aretha Franklin, Beyonce has a beautiful voice and her vocal arrangements are out of control- in a good way :)
For someone with the vocal talent that Beyonce possesses, I wish she would concentrate on her lyrics than her moves and looks.
Other than that, great article and for the most part, right on point!

Some of the people writing thier comments didn't even read what Clayton wrote. He's not doggin Beyonce and he addresses her talent. He's also not saying that Beyonce shouldn't think that she's a diva. He's saying that OTHER's ARE CALLING HER A DIVA! The math proves that she hasn't been as successful as other artist. Whether people aren't buying CD's as much as before or what remains to be seen. She hasn't had a song that REALLY show cases her OUTSTANDING VOICE!!! Stop cursing and bad mouthing someone for their OPINION; especially if you aren't READING or LISTENING to what thier saying. I'm sure their are people out their like-Asanti who SUCKS at singing. But people love Asanti. That's their opinion. But Asanti can't sing and Beyonce hasn't sold as many records as others.
These are the facts so DEAL!!!!
75 - Artistical Merit
The most important element that he touches on in this article is the commerical aspect of Beyonce. I think everyone can admit that her voice is far better than other pop stars like the Pussycat Dolls, or Brooke Hogan, or Paris Hilton, but Beyonce's music still lacks the depth and breadth of artists like Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, and Lauryn Hill. The three artists I just mentioned were able to strike an emotional feeling in their music that Beyonce just can't seem to duplicate. I am not really a fan of Beyonce's music besides the entertaining songs that they play in clubs for their sheer entertainment value, but I always hope that she will prove me wrong and come out with something original and deep. She seems pretty surface level and seems content playing this role of character-less, pop song singing, glitz and glamour R&B SINGER as opposed to an artist who has feelings, thoughts, and sentiments that she would like to express through music. I can only fault her history and seeing all these programs about how from an early age all they wanted was a record contract and to be commercial artists. She doesn't seem to have had a life that enables her to be artistic, it seems like it was always a highly crafted act. I think the author's perspective on this blog, was just to get people to recognize that. Recognize the difference between a true artist and a commercial product that was created soley for the consumption of mass audiences. Beyonce is selling records, getting commercial deals, and laughing all the way to the bank, however seeing her on tv trying to portray a legtimate artist is a bit of a joke and offensive to artists like Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, and Norah Jones who are trying to take music somewhere different.
