Reviews in Brief: The Academy Is - Lost in Pacific Time (AP/EP)

Part of: Reviews in Brief

Over the past few years, listeners have come to expect nothing less than quality, youth-evoking pop rock from the Chicago-based band, The Academy Is. The release of Lost in Pacific Time (EP) anticipates their upcoming tour as a co-headliner of AP Magazine’s “Fall Ball.” The EP is available for digital download now and will be available at all of the stops on the tour. It is well worth the mere pocket change it will cost you to pick up a copy.

Lost in Pacific Time is a nice follow-up to Fast Time at Barrington High, the band’s highly acclaimed album released in 2008. These additional five songs keep in line with the lively, pop rock we have come to expect from the band. In an industry where the struggle to stay afloat never ends, perhaps these guys continue to succeed because of their feel-good appeal. Instead of trying to invent a new, overly-indie sound, they continue to churn out consistently fun songs.

Lead singer William Beckett’s endearing vocals will win the hearts of young girls everywhere as he relays stories about young love and adventures that will send your mind spiraling through high school memories. A favorite on the EP is “I’m Yours Tonight.” Beckett sings, “Even in your dreams/I'll pull the stars down from the heavens/To fill your empty skies.” The great thing about this song, as well as their music in general, is the band’s ability to stay away from an overly “emo” sound while still making the listener feel something. It’s no wonder that critics from Rolling Stone and AP Magazine have taken note of The Academy Is.

Fans of The Starting Line, Fallout Boy, Mayday Parade, and The All American Rejects will love Lost in Pacific Time. It’s the perfect addition to your Friday night mix tape.
