Review: Whatever: The ‘90s Pop & Culture Box

Ladies, go get yourself a spiral perm. Guys, dig out your wind pants. It’s time to revisit the 90’s with Rhino’s newly released Whatever: The ‘90s Pop & Culture Box.

In case you don’t already feel middle age creeping up on you, Rhino really drives the point home with this 7-CD, 130 song collection of the music we grooved to while munching on a McDonald’s Arch Deluxe and trading Beanie Babies.

At first, you may wonder if there are 130 songs from that decade even worth mentioning. When you peruse the track list, however, you’ll find many cuts so popular that they continue to get airplay on mainstream radio to this day.

Who can forget songs like:

• “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” - Spin Doctors
• “Hey Jealousy” - Gin Blossoms
• “Buddy Holly” - Weezer
• “Run-Around” - Blues Traveler
• “The Impression That I Get” - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
• “Natural Blues” – Moby

To be sure, there are some songs that we’d all like to forget:
• “I’m Too Sexy” - Right Said Fred
• “WHOOMP! (There It Is)” - Tag Team

and songs that radio stations won’t stop playing long enough for us to forget:

• “I’ll Be There For You” (Theme From Friends) — The Rembrandts
• “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” - Deep Blue Something

Since there are 130 tracks, however, there is bound to be a little something on here to please everyone. Pop these CDs in your player and count how many times you say, “Oh yeah! I forgot about that song!” and “Hey! They played that at my Homecoming Dance.” Of course, you may also go running to the mirror to pluck grey hairs and suddenly find yourself wistfully flipping through your yearbook.

Also, don’t underestimate the power that owning this compilation will have over your children. With more and more older pop songs being remade all the time, you can whip out your set of CDs and tell your kids you liked it first. Either they’ll think you’re very cool or they’ll start listening to Gregorian Chants instead.

Rhino did a great job culling tracks from a decade that wasn’t exactly known for its cutting edge music. Whatever: The ‘90s Pop & Culture Box is a must-have set for anyone who wants to revisit their youth while tooling around town in their first generation Saturn.

I bought so many albums during the 90s that I bet I can reproduce most of this set from my iTunes library already!
