No offence, but have any of you who listened to te CD (and liked it) actually listen to the vocals? "Jules" isn't on key on one single song on the CD, without his staticy vocal filter he is quite incapable of singing and their attempt to grow as a band has shown all of their shortcomings. The filter was the only thing keeping his vocals on key on their first two cds without it the music sounds like it was made by amatuers not professionals.
This album is pure gold. The first song, You Only Live Once, is so fucking awesome. I can't get the riff out of my head, I sadly think that this review isn't excactly what I believe. Also many of the other songs such as Razorblade etc. are really great. I definetely don't agree with you.

I think that one of the best things in the strokes is the offtune singing of Julian, and this new album has it in such a larger scale that I can“t think properly...

You are praising the man's inability to hit half the notes he aims for... how silly.
Ok, so Julian is no Robert Pollard (vocally adept)BUT he sounds good enough on this record, even without his "phone-booth" vocal effect. I listen to these guys for the interesting guitar interplay and catchy, simple song-structures. They are indeed venturing into new territory that they may not have a full grasp of yet, but it still manges to be tight, and a welcome change of pace for my ears. Sure, thier whole image may piss us off somtimes, but theyre one of the only popular bands that deserve credibility for thier music. Hopefully people will notice other great bands that have made a significant impact recently, (Spoon, anyone?)

You people making fun of Julian's singing abilities are too cute. Ever do any singing? Better still...have you ever been to any rock concerts? Come on! Hitting high notes is for Celine Dion. The guy can croon, and the guy can scream. Recording the vox out of an amp was a badass effect, but's it's always been about the voice behind it. Everyone who's seen them play live (gasp..no vocal effects) can testify to that. Psssh.
As for the album, I dig it. I'm excited for the Strokes. These are solid songs, and in interesting new ways. I agree with whoever said they sound more confident. There's some music on this album that calls to mind the Pixies' stuff...whom I've always suspected to be a secret influence of the Strokes. An entire chorus of him screaming "you're no fun"? Eastern European guitar solos? Hell yes. I love getting fucked with by my favorite bands.

I just saw the video for "juicebox" last night on LOGO, the gay cable channel, and I thought it was really bad. I feel sorry for bands that have so much hype to live up to. In truth it's just as bad as everything else on the radio, but since they had high hopes it just sounds that much worse. My guess is all of the die-hard fans are guitar players who enjoy listening to the back-and-forth guitar work, because the actual songwriting is boring and offers nothing you can't find in any club in any town on any given night.

I think this album is not nearly as bad as some of you are making it out to be and not nearly as brilliant as others are making it out to be. Its right in the middle and I'm sure it will just divide the Strokes fanbase even more and it will likely have a similiar critical reception to what "Room On Fire" got. So its decent, it has its moments, I do think its their weakest album but its still better than most records released today.
The Strokes are one of the few non-indie/obscure bands that can actually keep releasing good music. So I give them props for that. Is this record gonna change the world? No, not at all. I'm glad that they were trying to reach and expand their sound --- at least they tried it. And on half of the record, I think they make it.
If you are looking for just good old Rock N Roll I think this band delivers nearly every time, I mean give them a break they aren't the Beatles or even the Velvet Underground. They were never gonna be that band, they are just simply a fine rock band in an era where good rock bands aren't just found around the corner.
4/5 Stars is what I'd rate this album.

this album is another masterpiece. I noticed that ROF took a few listens before really growing on me. This was similar, after a couple listens I loved it. I believe this is some of the best music of the times.
