The 40-year-old Virgin is an original motion picture soundtrack from Universal Studios. This soundtrack is under the production of Jeff Palo.
The soundtrack contains 17 songs from the movie including the bonus track, "The First Time" by Steve Carell from the deleted karaoke scene.
There is a wide range of songs from the mellow music of Smokey Robinson's "Virgin Man" to Michael McDonald's energetic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." The songs are all classics from the 70's and 80's. Seeing as I wasn't born to until the late 80's they seem rather cheesy, but that can very well add to the intent of the producer.
If you are a fan of pop music from this time, it will add a great mix of songs to your collection.
Judd Apatow is quoted in the liner notes as saying:
I hope people watch this and think the music is varied and unique, both when it is good and awful. It is hard for me to judge which is which because I love the awful stuff as much as I love the good stuff. Hopefully you will enjoy this CD as much as I do.
I haven't seen the movie, but from listening to the soundtrack I know that these songs have to add to the humor of the movie. They have a cheesy quality that romanticizes sex. It simply has to be a humorous contrast to the plight of The 40-year-old Virgin.
