I recently watched two Steve Earlie movies: Steve Earle on Austin City Limits and Just An American Boy.
He is one of my favorite musicians since he is so articulate, intelligent and daring.
These two dvds, especially when watched together, provide a good look at the complete Steve Earle.
The 1986 Austin City Limits performance showed what he was like in his less political days.
Just An American Boy focuses instead on his controversial, political lyrics of recent albums, partially the controversy over a song he wrote from the perspective of John Walker.
Some parts are good, some weak.
If you're interesed in the controversy, watch it. But be warned the shaky camera can make one feel sick.
I found the live cd a better account of the controversy, and more entertaining to boot.
I give Austin City Limits a 8, Just An American Boy a 07 and the CD itself a 9

Not to mention the terrible battle with herion addiction, prison and other malady's of a tortured soul. He's such a sensative personality, to weather so many storms and to continue to actually survive and function in a demanding business.

Exactly. He's battled his share of demons,
some of his own creation, and come out the better for it.
