Review: Ovum - The Fall Collection

Using a metaphor from the fashion world, Josh Wink shows off The Fall Collection, a 10-year compendium of tracks from his Columbia Records subsidiary Ovum. In the manner of models gliding down the catwalk, the eclectic international grouping of DJs and artists here roam across a range of dance music styles and influences while remaining distinctively Ovum. What is the unifying feature of Ovum's recordings? It's difficult to put into words, but a certain atmospheric and ethereal ambiance perfect for 21st century life after 8 is abundant on The Fall Collection.

Ovum originated 10 years ago in Philadelphia with Josh Wink and DJ King Britt. Over the years Wink has emerged as the soul and spirit of the label guiding releases that often exploring a warmly 'human' side of dance music technology. After aligning Ovum with Columbia Records in 1997, Wink's releases have made regular appearances on the U.S. dance music charts as well as scoring hits across Europe. Ovum is at the forefront of a developing genre of electronic music that borrows nearly equally from the dancefloor and ambiant sound experiments.

Among the standout cuts here are Estonia-based Rulers Of the Deep's rhythmic explorations on "Elu On Mi Ulu which kick off the collection. A few cuts later we're treated to Josh Wink's own work on "Sixth Sense," a gorgeous collaboration with poet Ursula Rucker. German minimalist dance composer Steve Bug channels the heart of classic Chicago house with "Houze," a track which deftly melts into "Acid Tricks," a tribute to the late 80's acid revolution by French master D'Julz. Universal Agents throw a techno sheen and a touch of Balearic sunshine over top of house rhythms on the glowing "West Of Athens."

The sound of Ovum's aesthetic will ring familiar bells with many listeners and dancers as it borrows nearly equally from classic house, techno, tribal and chill out genres. However, we rarely have the opportunity to hear such a seamless collection of tracks chosen by a master alchemist like Wink. Slip this disc into your player and simply enjoy.
