Ok, so the short version of the long story is that this band rocks, and You're a Long Time Dead... is a thoroughly enjoyable debut. About halfway through my listen I told a friend of mine that Mama Scuba might be what Clinic would sound like if Clinic didn't suck, then thought better of repeating that to anyone else. The bottom line is this: Mama Scuba treads dangerously close to the line between good music and artsy-fartsy noise, but never crosses onto the wrong side. As a result, the first listen was a bit nervewracking, not unlike the penalty shot scene at the end of Disney's The Mighty Ducks. But, just like good old Charlie Conway, Mama Scuba scores. And, just like you want to want to watch The Mighty Ducks over and over again, Mama Scuba will keep calling you back.
P.S. If you're thinking of emailing me to tell me The Mighty Ducks was a shitty movie, you better stop thinking about it right now. Dick.
P.P.S. Aside from Fahrenheit 9/11, The Mighty Ducks is the only movie I've ever seen an audience applaud at the end. Seriously.
