Review: Austin City Limit Music Festival Day One

Today kicked off the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas. It started off with a bang too.

Hosted in Austin’s Zilker Park, along Town Lake, ACL is a celebration of diversity with an eclectic mix of musical talent. This is the fourth year of the festival created in honor of the PBS television series. In addition to the music, Austin City Limits offers festival goers with a variety of food, beverage, art, and other activities. And to show that the fans are important, the organizers cut capacity by 10,000 to shorten lines and increase comfort.

ACL Fest attracts fans from around the globe by presenting artists from the newest hit makers, to respected legends, and even cult favorites. So if you like blues or rock, folk or emo, country or gospel, there is a place for you at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. For a full schedule please check out the ACL website.

Unable to take the entire day off, I arrived to Friday’s festivities around 6pm. I was able to catch the end of Spoon’s set, which prepared me and set the mood to listen to some great music. Walking across Zilker Park I was also able to catch the last song from Thievery Corporation. Both of these bands had quite a large crowd gathered, leaving the grounds littered with beer cans, water bottles, and plastic cups. The festival organizers anticipated this and had crews cleaning up throughout the day, keeping the park clean and adding to the amazing atmosphere.

I then caught the very beginning of Blues Traveler before heading over to the Austin Ventures stage to catch Blue October. Having seen Blues Traveler at South By Southwest in March, I decided I could miss their set to catch one of my new favorite bands.

It's a shame I am nowhere near Austin, or Texas for that matter. Sounds like a great music festival going on.
