Aphrodite – Overdrive
I waited eagerly for this CD to arrive – Aphrodite has been producing and mixing for 100s of people since the early dawning of the drum and bass era in the 90s. Hits of the past have included his urban jungle mix – which is and was a great success, featuring an exciting, fast moving, and funky look at the genre as it stood then. So, with this I expected the master to bring the current best and a flavour of things to come.
The CD starts off promisingly with a track to set the vibe and energy of the release. It’s followed by Precinct 13 by Accidental Heros, a track that’s been around for a long while now. It's not exactly new but still, not a bad disco/vocal track as they go. My impression at this stage was that this was going to be a disco mix that was going to go gradually into the harder side of things.
However, the from that point there CD really loses its way – the mix turns into a long succession of very uninteresting rhythms and basslines - there’s very little variety, the tracks go nowhere, vocals are poor, there’s no flow or originality of tracks from 3-19 – The style that this mix contains is very much taken from the Distorted Minds school – very simple and samey which makes the whole CD uninteresting as there’s little to keep you interested. Unfortunately the mix fits into the stereotypical view people have of this type of music. If you get through 3-19 then there’s a good finale of tracks 20 and 21. But they weren't good enough to raise the overall standard of the CD.
