REM rocks Austin

REM made a stop in Austin last weekend for the Austin City Limits Festival: three days of music, food, arts, and pot. REM headlined the weekend by closing with a nearly two-hour show on Sunday night. Lance Armstrong did the introductory honors, after himself being introduced by Austin’s mayor and Texas Rep Lloyd Doggett. It was a star-studded weekend.

This was my third REM show, the first two being the Monster and Up tours. This show was undoubtedly more comprehensive. Some memorable moments:

  • Stipe giving Mills a hard time when Mills tries to take over the center mic to sing Don’t Go Back To Rockville
  • The crowd singing in unison to Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts, and Man On The Moon
  • Stipe slowly stripping off three layers of shirts (?)
  • They played new, unreleased songs
  • The toy dinosaurs on Buck’s row of amplifiers
  • Stipe’s “goofin’ on Elvis” dance moves
  • Buck, Mills, and company sounded tight and didn’t miss a note
  • They closed with a charming version of Nightswimming and It’s The End Of The World As We Know It.

If you get the chance to catch them on this tour, don’t miss it.

For good measure, Murmur (1983) and Reveal (2001) are Amazon'd below.
