Popa Chubby, Gina Fox To Headline Benefit For Peter Karp's Ailing Wife

Blues artist Gina Fox is teaming up with Popa Chubby,  Nicole Hart (featuring Gil Paris),  Dave Malachoski's Woodstock Allstars, with Jill Stevenson, and Dennis Gruenling for a benefit concert in Hoboken, NJ on September 23 for the wife of fellow bluesman Peter Karp.

Karp's wife Marylou, 50, was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer which was initially misdiagnosed as a herniated disc.  Ovarian cancer, often referred to as a "silent killer," often reaches stage 3 or 4 before it is properly diagnosed. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women, with one out of 100 women succumbing to it.  She is the mother of two children and is undergoing aggressive treatment at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

According to the National Cancer Institute, most women are over the age of 55 when they're diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  The leading risk factors are family/personal cancer histories and age.  The NCI also says women who have never been pregnant have an increased risk factor of ovarian cancer.  Stage 4 is the last stage of the cancer according to the NIH, and often means cells have spread to tissues outside the abdomen and pelvic regions.

Maxwells in Hoboken is donating the space for Fox and friends to play and raise money for the Karp family. New York guitar tour de force Popa Chubby is a popular draw on the blues circuit and is a fellow Blind Pig artist.  He released a new album, Deliveries After Dark, earlier this year.  Other guests may be added to the bill.

Shadows and Cracks was a BC Magazine Editors' Choice selection as Album of the Year for 2007 (review).  Karp appeared on the B-Sides Concept Album to discuss the album and more.  You can read an exceprt of that interview or hear it in its entirety.  His roadshow band has included former Rolling Stones lead guitarist Mick Taylor.  Taylor also played on Karp's The Turning Point.
