Pop (Culture) Quiz: Lenka And Missy Higgins Answer Some Simple Questions (Australian Edition)

When it comes to Australian pop culture, these musicians seem to be in perfect harmony.

Lenka provided her answers during a phone interview on October 20.  Missy Higgins’ answers were submitted via e-mail on October 23.

Meet the participants
The fellow Aussies are not only friends, but also chart-climbing singer-songwriters with blooming solo careers who are leading a group of women on an Australian invasion of America.

Higgins performed as a member of what Lenka refers to as the “Drunken Choir” on Lenka’s hit single “The Show,” a crowd-pleasing jolt of pop that was an iTunes “Single of the Week” and featured in Old Navy commercials.

Both have taken their acts on the road to the States.

How you know them
•The self-titled solo debut album by Lenka, right, was released September 23, 2008, on Epic Records. Named VH1’s “You Oughta Know” performer in early October, the artist formerly known as Lenka Kripac became a teen actress in Sydney before joining the electronic-rock group Decoder Ring as a vocalist/keyboardist in 2004. She made her U.S. network television debut on Late Night with Conan O’Brien on September 23, then followed that up with performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (October 16) and The Late Show with Craig Ferguson (October 24).

•Higgins, a native of Melbourne who plays piano and acoustic guitar, is considered a major star in Australia, producing the country’s best-selling album of 2005. Her latest release, On a Clear Night, on Warner Bros. Records, has already been certified triple platinum in Australia and earned her the equivalent of Australia’s Grammy as “Best Female Artist” for the second time. The video for “Where I Stood,” the opening track and first single off On a Clear Night, was in rotation on VH1 in October and the song has been featured on several TV shows, including Grey's Anatomy, Smallville, One Tree Hill, and The Hills.

•Lenka, who took a break to return to the Land Down Under for two shows in late October, joins the all-women Hotel Cafe Tour on November 11 at the Bluebird Theater in Denver.
