The legendary Peter Tosh talks about his hopes and plans - and the problems coming from the shitstem

August, 1983: Peter Tosh was the most popular reggae singer in the world (Bob Marley was dead). His credentials were myriad and impeccable. He was a founding member of the Wailers with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer in 1964, in the Trenchtown slum of Kingston, Jamaica. He taught Bob Marley to play guitar. He left the Wailers in 1975 to pursue a successful solo career which was peaking with the Mama Africa Tour of 82-84, which played every continent of the world except Antarctica.…

É um pena perdermos o Tosh tão cedo ... ele tinha uma visão superior, esta que nos permite afastar desse mundo falso e materialista. Ele continua brilhando num lugar melhor. Obrigado pela aula Mr Tosh.

I appreciate that even from time immemorial Saints were never loved by all.Its not surprising that you get people criticizing Tosh and giving their conclusive deductions and hypothesises of him being an egotist and all the obscenities etc.We shall all fight and quarrel if we want to be judgemental coz that is not our position.Lets applaud whats good and detaste the bad without being judgemental and spiteful, the man deserves props "give unto Ceasar wht belongs to Ceasar and to Tosh what belongs to Tosh"

Yes I and I liveth and I give thanks to Eric for posting this fantastic interview.

First, Why do we never hear the name of this so called "associate," of Tosh that took a rap for him in exchange for support of his family. This is also briefly mentioned in the Stepping Razor, but also quickly dismissed as lies. It also seems highly unreasonable. The only name surrounding the murder I have ever seen is Leppo..let this unamed avenger step forward. I am very interested in the other two Unamed gunmen that gunned down Peter execution style.
But Babylon the joke is on you as Peter no Dead.

Second, Africa is the central part remaining of Pangea, the earths orginal land mass...sooo "No matter where you come from, you are an African"

Give thanks and praises to Both Bob And Peter they have both decorated the entire earth with beautifull spiritual music for the heart!!

I have been thinking more about this. SO the story goes like this...."According to him, many years before his death, Peter Tosh had some sort of run in with the law. Sorry, I have no specifics concerning what for. The cops and authorities however were apparently coming down hard and looking to put PT away for a while. Because of this, an associate of PT's, who was apparently much less fortunate, offered to take the fall for whatever it was. In exchange, all he asked was that PT take care of his family while he was away and treat them as his own. The story goes that the man went to prison and emerged 15 years later only to find that..."

We are to believe that someone would go to jail for 15 years thus leaving his wife and children for a crime he did not commit in hope that his wife would be taken care by another man. And his children, who would be more than likely adults when he emerges, would be abandoned for their entire childhood. Wow, quite the guy, and what is this mans name, it should be easy to find if he did 15 years in jail.

Peter was a revolutionary and was cowardly executed...what else can you say about being shot face down in the back of the head?

Peter's whole life reads like a conspiracy theory...he even predicted his own death just weeks before. A definitive biography has never been released although it was written but stopped at the last minute...why ? For Peter's memory the truth must be revealed by all of his fans - we gotta come togetha to right this wrong.

"I find it interesting that the exhortations left on this post are all of a positive naure. Yah mon!"

Yeah, because he comes across as a BS-ing con-man, who thinks he's God and the greatest musician ever. Methink's I detect a bit of jealously over the fact that his erstwhile bandmate and friend became a much greater and influenetial and lasting musician than he did! All he can say of Marley is "Bob Marley dead, mon"?

And then he complains about his US audience being mostly white, yet constantly talks of his need to make money, sell records...so, would he prefer whites not to buy them? Are only blacks supposed to buy his records? Will he return the money from white buyers?

tosh was talented, made a couple great songs (Legalize It, Pick Myself Up), but the bottom line is he can't hold a canlde to Marley..that is his regret and his tragedy. RIP

excellent points - he was a man of contradictions. No question he was resentful, perhaps jealous of Marley. It's too bad because he's one of the small handful of reggae greats

To me personally my dear friend and confidant the late great legendary Mr Peter Tosh was extremely well educated, and spoke in such a fatidic manner which seem to flow naturally, to me he was more than a friend, we were like brothers from different mothers if you will, and yet privately he was a very compassionate person, occasionally shy which ironically was quite the antithesis to his extravagant outgoing onstage presence which i’d witnessed on many occasions, i so miss his presence, Lord have Mercy, In ernest Neville Bardoli aka ‘Steppin Razor (c) ‘A Rastaman Prod Inc’ 2011

Bob Marley was a hero figure, in the classic mythological sense. His departure from this planet came at a point when his vision of One World, One Love ?" inspired by his belief in Rastafari ?" was beginning to be heard and felt. The last Bob Marley and the Wailers tour in 1980 attracted the largest audiences at that time for any musical act in Europe.

Bob’s story is that of an archetype, which is why it continues to have such a powerful and ever-growing resonance: it embodies political repression, metaphysical and artistic insights, gangland warfare and various periods of mystical wilderness. And his audience continues to widen: to westerners Bob’s apocalyptic truths prove inspirational and life-changing; in the Third World his impact goes much further. Not just among Jamaicans, but also the Hopi Indians of New Mexico and the Maoris of New Zealand, in Indonesia and India, and especially in those parts of West Africa from wihch slaves were plucked and taken to the New World, Bob is seen as a redeemer figure returning to lead this.

Bob Marley at The One Love Peace Conference said the following as he called the two politicians onstage, and while he held their hands above his head and said while improvising on "Jammin'":

“ Just let me tell you something (yeah), to make e...verything come true, we gotta be together. (Yeah, yeah, yeah) and through the spirit of the Most High, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I, we're inviting a few leading people of the slaves to shake hands. . . To show the people that you love them right, to show the people that you gonna unite, show the people that you're over bright, show the people that everything is all right. Watch, watch, watch, what you're doing, because I wanna send a message right out there. I mean, I'm not so good at talking but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Well, I'm trying to say, could we have, could we have, up here onstage here the presence of Mr. Michael Manley and Mr. Edward Seaga. I just want to shake hands and show the people that we're gonna make it right, we're gonna unite, we're gonna make it right, we've got to unite . The moon is right over my head, and I give my love instead. The moon was right above my head, and I give my love instead.
