The legendary Peter Tosh talks about his hopes and plans - and the problems coming from the shitstem
August, 1983: Peter Tosh was the most popular reggae singer in the world (Bob Marley was dead). His credentials were myriad and impeccable. He was a founding member of the Wailers with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer in 1964, in the Trenchtown slum of Kingston, Jamaica. He taught Bob Marley to play guitar. He left the Wailers in 1975 to pursue a successful solo career which was peaking with the Mama Africa Tour of 82-84, which played every continent of the world except Antarctica.…

I think a certain amount of intimidation is part of his personality. I didn't feel threatened in any way and it seemed real important to him to convey his ideas clearly to me -- sometimes he would slow down and enunciate when he wanted to make sure I got something -- but he did make a huge show of rolling a cigar-sized spliff and then filling the room with enough smoke to kill an elephant.

Irie~ COOL RUNNING MON!
Jamaica mon---
Blue Mountain coffee
and a big fat BLUNT..........
HEAVEN!
and Tosh' comment: comparisons aRE the DEVIL ~~ amen!
The Devil leads us into the great "right or wrong"---"better or worse" "more talent-less talent" BULLSHIT--this IS hell---
ALL IS One---so none can be "better-worse--right-wrong"---
We ALL are the same--black-white-yellow-brown---
Here is a very happy ancient tale from an old Witch friend:
For millions of years---in prehistoric earth--cells kept splitting and dying--splitting and dying---on and on and on and on~~~ over MILLIONS of years~~~
SUDDENLY~~~~~~~~
a cell split AND ...............
the two halves LIVED ....!!!!!
and then the same thing happened over and over and over and over ---
and then the two split again and those two split and it kept going this time and on and on and on and on and....
down to TODAY....!!!!
OK---point of ancient Witch Tale:
here we are today---every single one of us---brown-red-black-pink-white--polka dot---
when that 1st cell split---and the two remaining ones lived and split-etc., etc., --this eventually gave rise to every single one of US.....so we ALL have part of that very 1st cell that split in half and lived in each of us.......
It is literally true that we are all ONE--it is NOT a figure of speech or a metaphor~~~~
and whenever we argue-fight-hurt another----we hurt ourselves also.....just as much......
i know it's hard to remember--and "none of us are saints"---but that's not true either: we ARE all "saints" --we are all PERFECT children of Spirit and can do no wrong---there is "karma" and everything must be "balanced"---so if I DO steal--I will be stolen FROM....not punishment--just a physical/spiritual law of our existence...
So being that we are sometimes "less than perfect" --- i find it might be nice to do as many "good" things as I can think of as kind of a buffer / insurance policy to help soften those inescapeable karmic boomerangs ......
And ----if you all have not heard any music by Johhny Klegg - from South Africa-----go FIND SOME .............
Cool Running Mon .

Eric, I thank you in the name of all reggae lovers and freedom loving people across the globe, for posting this magnificent interview with the super man.
I want to ask everybody your opinion. Did Bob Marley become so successful because he was half-white?
Jah bless you all
Long live Bob and Peter

Well, PT knows his dope, and it shows.
I was never a huge fan of Tosh's solo work; I ran towards dub, but I can't deny his work with the Wailer's sets the standard for reggae.
So, who's next, Eric? Yellowman, Mutabaruka, Scientist?
Anyone who can sit still when reggae's playing is dead, him just don't know it yet.
83 - Eric Olsen
thanks RL, I am so happy this interview has been of interest to so many people. Fascinating question about Bob - he certainly didn't identify with his white father, who was much older than his mother and never much of his life.
Ski, Tosh was up and down solo, typically less melodic than Marley, but I think Mama Africa holds up with most anything Bob did.

Please E-mail I,
Thank You and

I had the great good fortune of seeing Peter Tosh in Toronto in the very early eighties. On this tour he had "Taxi Squad", Robbies Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar, as his rythem secttion. Absolutly the tightest reggae show I've ever seen!
The man was magnificant and intimidating on stage, in person I can only imagine the aura given off by his presence. Sorry if that sounds sort of new agy but you get the idea.
He is sorely missed in these days of conformity and white apropriation of black culture. I can't see him or any of the reggae heavies standing for the way rap has been twisted into a fasion statement for white homies from suburbia.

thanks Ras Craig, yes, certainly that was just my opinion about his albums being variable, but when he was on he was great, and the live show was dominating.
Once again, I have to try to find the interview tape. It is certainly of historical as well as personal interest.
g-man, he was a force indeed!

Give Peter a song to sing like Chuck Berry's Jonny Be Goode and Rolling Stone's Don't look back and see how he plays them and you'll know he was a true artist but what made him genuine was; good as these songs are, he liked making and singing his own songs.

to feel it is to really understand it. Mr Peter Tosh has been taken from us to early in this lifetime. I have been priveledged to see this master of reggae and what Rasta has to stand for only four times live and to see his son Andrew at least 1 dozen times. His symbol of rasta music lives on daily in my world and will teach my children everything he stands for. He set trends as a musician, artist, as well as an architect as a reggae musician, and may his guitar bellos sing on!!! Jah Rastafarai.

And Yes that is my real name "Woldesemayat" that was given to me in ethiopian orthodox chruch which connected me to the other "Woldesemayat" the great Peter Tosh when he got baptized in the ehthiopian orthodx church. This was a true rasta who took his upon this life to eradicate the shistem that black poor people have been living all thier life time. I always tell people if you want to know how great and true this man was just listen to the one love peace concert cd and you will see. Yes people always talk about how bob got the two leaders to shake hands on stage but really what did that to improve the lives of the jamican people. Peter was a prophet and a prophet always speaks the truth. For a man in a third world country where what you say and do is controlled to the max he was the real hero. He paid a huge price for that too. He was not trying to be ethiopian he was an ethiopian, he spoke the language knew the culture. The song Igziabher says it all about this man and his profound love and respect for the almighty. I am glad I came across this blog and reading all the comments about Woldesemayt really affirmed my belief that this man is trully a prophet who was sacrificed by the shitsem so people wont know nothing about the truth.
Give thanks and bless.

If you check all musics (including reggae music) on hearth have limit that is they tire you at a certain extent, yet tosh's music is superior to this fenomenon, why? only one answer as far as i can see,his music is not terrestial, he is not terrestial.it's a pity that most Africans refuse to see for themselves and instead wait for the media to tell them everything, because Peter is prove that God favours Africa and wants Africans to Arise. He is the Best, the Foundation. While i am Black and Proud, fools keep dieing

i enjoyed the peter tosh interview; i did not realize he was such a spiritual(if that's the right word) person. i recall during the early 80's, the first time i heard bob marley's music, i wasn't so thrilled. but the first time i heard peter tosh, i was enthralled. it sounded like pure reggae. people just did not agree with me when i said,'bob marley is good, but peter tosh is better.' years later, on a vh-1 behind the music show about peter tosh, i recall that the producer of the wailers decided to put bob marley up front because he was half-white and would be more appealing to the mainstream audience, which did not sit too well with peter tosh. perhaps this explains the reference he made in the interview to bob marley's half-whiteness. my favorite peter tosh albums are legalize it and wanted: dread and alive. they are testaments to his gifts as musician, songwriter, philosopher, and historian. thanks for posting a great interview. i learned more from it than i ever could sitting in a professor's philosophy class.

That was a great interview. You truly capured the moment through your discriptions. I also think you asked the right questions, to give us a glimpse of what PT was truly all about.
I am a huge reggae fan. I've been collecting classic and contemporary 45's for years now. I have respect for PT as a musician, although not one of my top 10. I have little respect though for many of his attitudes. I am quite surprised, after reading the interview and then reading through the comments that so few people had anything but positives to say about him and in particular his words, in the interview.
One person had mentioned the story surrounding his death, which, I've heard several times on my visits to Jamaica. Everyone I've spoken to over the years have all said that it was retaliation for his former friend serving serving many years in prison for PT in exchange for his family being well cared for. PT did not live up to his end at all.
In the interview, he came across as being very self righteous, arrogant, greedy, jealous and semi-delusional . I won't take up the space in this blog to quote him, but I believe if you scan over the interview again, you will clearly see all of the attitudes I have just mentioned.
He was obviously very jealous of Bob (personally, Bunny is my favorite Wailer, so that is not affecting my judgement), overly concerned with $ and sales (for a true rasta), but at the same time angry that so much of his audience was white (a bit racist for someone who preaches equality amongst people), and had to blame anyone but himself for poor record sales.
I think it's great that people love his music...but let's not let that over shadow everything by calling him a prophet, as I saw in many of the comments. He was a great musician with an even greater ego.
111 - justafan
Fantastic interview. I think the bottom line is never before -- and woe to humankind -- perhaps never again, will there be a confluence of talent the likes of Peter, Bunny, and Bob coming together again. Who cares if Bob's better? Or if Peter's better? They both are so talented, it's like comparing two blazing suns/stars in the heavens. Who's to say one is hotter, brighter than the other? They were too bright, too powerful to stay together for long. Each needed more space, more room as to pan out and reach different, broader audiences. As for the horrible tragedy of PT's murder, it's very difficult to imagine it NOT being politically motivated. I think Leppo? was definitely a patsy, PT had conflict througout his life with the Jamaican police/authorities. He himself told how they had "beat him within an inch of his life" one time back in the 70's. Finally, Bob himself basically predicted Peter's demise, did he not? "How long shall they kill our profits, while we stand aside and look...?"

peter tosh is the great reggae legends ever. the reason why i dont like bob marley is because he never ever gave peter tosh his props peter tosh wrote alot of bob marley stuff never a thank you or anything thats the reason why i dont respect bob i know he's a legend but peter tosh is the reggae's king thats all i got to say peace
113 - Akat
I just wanna say a truth to a couple of dumbs(the writers of some comments above),one of which calls him/herself sarah that she/he probably understands but never overstands. Peter Tosh was,and is the King of reggae.white people have always done their best to raise their racemates and put them where a BlackMan deserves to be,and thats one of the two reasons why mr Bob seems to you to be what you think he is.the other reason and the main one is the fact of,unlikely most people who claim to be musicians, saying only what is truth in an inside-out world where bullshit is advertised and thruth distorched. Tosh was a Man inspired By GOD to speak the truth. his reggae is at the highest position among reggaes.I cannot awaken you if you refuse...
114 - Mannay
Sarah- please do not portray yourself as one qualified or knowledgable in Reggae music and thus qualified to judge Peter Tosh. Because your venomous spewing upon a legend is inconcievable. How can you criticize Peter Tosh and his struggle against the imperial/colonial "shitstem?" He was the most eloquent speaker of Jamaican liberation against European imperialism, how is that NOT an exalted cause? Please crawl back into the hole of idiocy that you emerged from.
115 - Kassel
Yes, I agree, Sarah has no right to portray the Stepping Razor in a negative light. You sound critical of a man who was speaking out against the colonial shitstem and helping the oppressed people. What gives you this authority to do this? Nobody takes your statements seriously and you sound more like a bitter celibate woman than a knowledgable Rasta. "PT did not live up to his end of the bargain?" Why don't you prove this wooman instead of making critical statements and throwing dirt on the good man's grave?
116 - Gaddyson
Peter was a man who was trying to uplift the mind of oppresed people. But the SHITSTEM didnot leave him alone cause he was pointing the problem from it's roots. That's why the media and SHITSTEM leaders branded him a RADICAL. A Radical in the face of truth is not sin. A radical in the face of humiliation, degradation and all kinda of ion is sin and disgrace.
Something must be done to make sure the whole (true0 history of Tosh is known. Many people talk bout marley. We know he was there and as Tosh put; he did his job and gone. But the way people and media talks about him, one may think that the KING OF REAGAE i.e Tosh he's not excting. Always people talks about Tosh as a jailbird,Ganja smoker and all kinda of bad sounding act.The web should be created for people to know WHAT TYPE OF MAN WAS HE.The UNTOLD story must be open to all for this man who died because of others.Talks aboutmarley: this because many people can listen to his songs. We should do our best to make sure people can listen to Tosh as well and compare between two.The results others will not agree, but that's their proplem.Listen to Downpressorman,Glasshouse,NO NUKE WAR to know WHAT TYPE OF MAN TOSH WAS and to what he was stand for.

MANNAY and the other Sarah-attackers: What "venemous spewing"?? You know the old saying- "You spot it, you got it". Sarah said nothing that required your backlash. She stated the truth as she saw it. Your childish attacks on this person is the result of her having the temerity to disagree with you on your myopic view of Tosh. By all accounts I've heard and read(and I've read/heard A LOT), Tosh was indeed quite the egotist. He also indulged in quite a bit of duplicity, on one hand preaching "unity" and on the other hand making blatantly racist statements. Face it, the man spoke often out of both sides of his face. That's a proveable fact, not an opinion.
It is also a matter of record that many people in his life felt that he was overly-critical of everybody and a bit paranoid-delusional towards the end of it. Sorry Rastas, but like as not, marajuana is a HALLUCINOGEN. Period. And it tends to make some members of the populace pretty paranoid. Tosh was obviously part of this demographic.
I'm a fan of PTs music, but stop trying to make him into a saint. Or do I need to bring up the thuggish, cowardly trashing Keith Richards' home that PT and his friends indulged in?
120 - Nero
...oh, and I guess cuz I have the gall to challenge your long-cherished views, I'm a "hate-monger" and an "idiot", right?
121 - tony
peter tosh had no duplicity. he new himself, im almost positive. he was jsut concious of the facts that are on this eart, and racism is one, so he seeked to help his people grow, you see?
he was maybe paranoid of the truth, and critical of people but not judgemental. he didnt have the seperation of sex's like bob, and had good friends of all colors. keith richards messed with him, so why wouldnt he get mad?
122 - NERO
He did more than "get mad". He vandalised the man's home. A cowardly act. How did Keith "mess" with him? Did he destroy Peter's home?
123 - Roman
...or threaten his life? Tosh threatened to murder Richards if he came to his own house, where Tosh and his buddies were lounging.
There sure are a lot of Tosh apologists on this board. He was an excellent musician and artist, but let's not whitewash him too much here.
124 - tony
he's too black to be whitewashed.
chill on the EGO you 2. didnt keith richards owe him money??
125 - NERO
Peter Tosh thought everybody owed him something. Always complaining about being "ripped-off". Maybe some of it had merit, but I doubt all of it.
